problem while smoothing
« on: October 03, 2009, 07:59:57 am »

hi all
here's the thing, i was upgrading eggplant from tutorial (i'm still rookie), and i wanted to add leaf on stem. before smoothing, leaf looks like this:

it was made by extrudinh and moving points.
when i run build-> subdivide faces, i get following:

any idea, why do i get this?

in addition, i wanna ask whats the quickest way to subtract 1 object from another. (i saw tutorial, but it seems like a long way tio do it, especialy if u have to do a lot of subtractions.)

thank you all,

check that there are no edges with three faces attached, it could be there is a face attached inside the centre of the leaf.

yea it has a bunch of different colors and whatnot to tell you what your doing wrong. but this particular problem i get the most. usually you have two lines connecting to one eddge point. or even sometimes u have to replace a line. so if u were u i would just replace almost everything.

its either we are doing something wrong or the progrtam is. either way its a pretty wuick fix you just have to look for it.

You delete the faces by the missing edge, add the edge, then select all of the edges, and use fill holes.

or u can use the cut tool. which can b kind of a hassle sometimes. you need to have it only selecting the front or else u might cut the back. i usually delete the faces then add an edge.

your model looks good though but on your second image it looked like you subdivided the faces. that really doesnt need to have that many polies on it. you might want to try and convert to subdivided. otherwise your textures will make all the detail and you wont need that big of a model.

duh. i think you said you have more than one object. if you do and you want it to be one object

select all objects / go to build > join solids (this will make two or more objects into 1 (very handy when you mirror))

when you join solids you DO NOT CONNECT THE EDGE POINTS

you need to merge points (shift+L)

make sure you dont merge them too high or you will merge the wrong points. you can select all points in your model or just the particular ones you need. it is kind of different from model to model.

none the less. even if im wrong about what i just said. merge points because sometimes your just not connected. and merging the points will connect you. either way it will clean up your model a bit and it might be easier to find whats wrong.

hope this helped.

Anim8or has no built-in boolean objects but Kubajzz wrote a brilliant script to do just the same

i have (another) question about boolean union from that script. when i try to union 2 meshes it says to me "1 or more selected shapes are open"
 any idea?

and another one.
for textures, is there any way to load them from file?
lets say i would have .jpg 20x20 pixels, with sample of wood. and i would apply it on tree, that i made, and anim8or wouls strech/tiler it all over my tree.

thanks for answers (i know i am annoying ;))

The boolean plugin only works when both shapes are 100% "closed" (for example a sphere or a cube). If a shape is "open" (for example a sphere with one face missing), it is not possible to determine what is inside and what is outside and that's why the script doesn't work.

As for textures, yes, it is possible to load them from file. I recommend reading the "Materials" section of the manual, I believe it will answer all your questions.

For the boolean I was going to say wait for Kubajzz to come along ..... and he already beat me to it  :)

You can load textures from file, no problem, check out the tutorials

for now, group saved th problem.
ok, only thing weird here is, that i could first, union cylinder and 2 spheres, bend them, union another cylinder, bend them a bit  and then i tried to union another cylinder, and i got that error.  is it possible that unioning the first 2 cylinders deleted some faces?

Yes, the boolean operations plugin is a bit buggy and sometimes it creates a shape with one or more faces missing.

I don't recommend using the plugin for union. You can get virtually the same result if you select the 2 shapes and click "Build > Join Solids". It is faster and more reliable. Basically, you should avoid using boolean operations whenever possible, because the resulting mesh is always kind of messy.
