MP3-Bot
« on: November 22, 2009, 06:51:06 pm »

Long time ago, since I was posting in this forum. One year I think.
Now I was starting my anim8or program again and trying to model a tiny robot.

Here is a little sketch of the scene.
And the final render.

Maybe I will change something of the tiny robots pose.

Before I forget, all was done in anim8or (modeling and rendering).
I am still very impressed by this little program anim8or. ^^

Hey, great work there! Have you been doing 3d in other programs in the meanwhile? - I remember your faucet with waterdrops.

I think for this image, you might want to render an Ambient Occlusion pass, and combine it in photoshop.. this way you will create some shadows from example the headphones onto the head.

Great work though! Impressed by the likeableness (?) of the character!

Thanks to all of you.

@ $imon
No, I donīt used any other programs in the meantime.
Some years ago I tried blender, but I donīt like the gui and the way you have to work with this program. I had the feeling that this program offers too much and I think I need years to handle all the stuff.
anim8or, on the other side, has only the thinks I really need, and so I have the feeling to be very quick in finishing my works.

But I still looking for an alternative program, which is as easy as anim8or, but has some more extras like fur, hair, KI and cloth. I also would pay up to 300€ - 400€ for such a program.

So, if anyone knows of such a program, please tell me. But I think I am not the only one who is looking for such a software ^^

i was merely asking if you used any other programs, since you havent seem to lost your touch after a year of not working with it ;)

I don't know of such a program, your best bet would really be blender.. however hard it is to use.
Maybe you can buy an older version of 3ds max or maya off of someone second-hand.

Carrara would definitely suit you Andy-Rch, and older versions of it are available for free at animanon.com.  If you PM Kreator he will be able to tell you what's required to get it.  Aside from the items you mentioned, Carrara also has a physics engine, animateable materials, motion blur, lens effects, super-quick renderer, network rendering, etc.  It is relatively easy to learn, and its only real drawback is a clunky internal modelling engine and incomprehensible UV coordinate editor, but most Carrara users model in something else (like Anim8or) and import the models as .obj or whatever.

By the way, I love your image.  The character is excellent, the modelling is crisp and tidy, the scene composition tells the story nicely.

Nice render andy-rich.

My suggestion will be some older version of 3ds max.  You can get it second hand.

It is an incredible software and comes packaged with mental ray.

Most impressive thing about 3ds max is the availability of huge resources and toturials on the net.  The tutorials that come with the package or available on its official web site for free download are enough to learn the program fairly quickly.

I was stunned to see how quickly it rendered a sphere of fur.

Or you could use Anim8or for your modelling and do your extra's in blender since it does have physics and hair simulations available. Maybe you could try to see if blender has an import script for .an8 files.

Nice robot andy! Lovely character. As simon said: an ambient occlusion pass will make this even better. Maybe render it with an higher AA (I know longer rendering), it's looks a bit grainy.

A for other software: try cinema 4d. I belief the newest version (11.5) only costs about 400-500 euro. Cinema 4d is capable of doing almost the same things as 3d max and maya and it's very easy to use: Almost like an anim8or 2.0 ;)

Thanks for all your nice critics.

And thanks for all the good suggestions which program could fit my desires.

Boy, this isnīt an easy decision. There are so many good ideas (modeling in anim8or and rendering in blender or carrara. Buying older versions of max3d or c4d). I think Iīll try out carrara first.
Yesterday I found a side where you can download a public beta of carrara 7 with licence-key. I havenīt try it out yet. And I donīt know if this link still works. But, if allowed, I could post the link here.
There is also a trial of Carrara 7. And, like you said, maybe kreator can tell me how to get an old version of carrara.

I hope carrara isnīt so difficult to learn.

And yes, I should try to render with a higher AA. This image was rendered with only 16.

Carrara Pro 6 is available at animanon in the shop http://www.animanon.com/Forum3/index.php
It has full licence key and can be registered with Daz.
our site shop is post based so the more posts you make the quicker you`ll get it!

Their (Dazs) hope, is that you will buy the content and perhaps upgrade to Pro 7 It will enable import of poser models

With regards to buying secondhand software I`d draw everybodies attention to the following link regards Timothy Vernon From Seattle (US) and an On Going lawsuit with Autodesk regards his sales of software on Ebay.

Thanks for your reply kreator.

I will have a look at your forum ^^

What I do not really understand, how do the three programs poser, daz and carrara work together? Do I need these three programs to get all needed tools I want (like fur, hair, cloth,...)? Or can I do all these thinks with only carrara?

Most of what you require is already in Carrara there is no need for the others

Poser , Daz, and Hexagon are other tools that you can use with Carrara Ie: import Poser Figures, Daz is good for puppeteer , and hexagon is a stand alone modeller .

We mostly use anim8or for the modeller as it is easier than Carrara`s own native modeller , then import into carrara as either a 3ds or .obj file.
