Title: How to copy vertices?
Post by: jerichob on January 10, 2010, 08:46:31 pm
How do I copy vertices or edges or faces?

For objects I use Edit->Copy (Ctrl-C), but this does not seem to work in "Object/Point Edit" mode.

I don't think you can copy individual vertices, I think what you have to do is copy the whole mesh and then remove the excess. That;s how I've been doing it. I wanted to build a room and then take the ceiling off of it but there was no way to copy the ceiling to a new object. So I ended up copying the whole room to the new object then removing the rest of the room leaving the ceiling, then going back to the original room and deleting the ceiling.

 Hello. :)

There is 1 workaround that i can think of. It involves detaching the face and mirroring the detached face, which gives you a copy of the face, with edges and vertices. (Remember, this is actually a reverse copy. You will need to 're-mirror the mirrored face again' to get an exact replica of the original face.)

But then you have the problem of the original face now being detached from your object. (the original ceiling is no longer attached to the room.  ;) )

Theres the option of putting it back, with join solids and merge points, but that can sometimes be difficult to get it exactly how it was.

A trick i found here was to:

After mirroring the face(s), select the copy of the face, (the 'twice mirrored copy), cut, open a new object, and paste it into there.
Then, Go straight back to your original object.  Hello, the 'undo' button is still active. (available). :D

Just click on the undo button until you are back to the point that you were before you detached the face(s).

Now the copied face is a complete new object, which can be copied and pasted back into the workarea of your original object. (the room).

 :) Hope it helps.

You don't need to mirror the detached face. Detach the face, copy / paste. Move the face out of the way, and there is another one underneath. Join solids, and merge selected points to put the old face back on the model.

I usually do it the following way:

Now you made me think of writing a simple plugin... Something like "Detach faces as a copy" command to do all this in 1 click.

Hi there, if you still need a simple way to copy a part of your mesh, try this:
