1111dav12, please provide more information so that we can try to identify the problem. Tell us exactly what happens when you try to run Anim8or. Tell us what version of Anim8or you're using. Give us your computer specs such as your graphics card, processor, memory.

Make sure the file has been extracted from the .zip file first before executing it. Make sure your graphics card drivers are completely up to date.

Anim8or shows up in the task manager, and then disappears. I use an eMachines Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit  using a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 2.30 GHz 2.30GHz processor with 2 GB of ram with a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family graphics card and all my drivers are up to date.

Woah hey, cool your shoes.

Intel Graphics Chipsets don't seem to like Anim8or very much, and could be the cause of your problems. Either that or it's another program such as your antivirus that could be getting in the way. If you run Windows in safe mode and try running Anim8or, more than likely it will work.

A few topics that might interest you. You may have to rollback to older drivers, or triple check that your current drivers are actually up-to-date. Also, run the Intel INF Utility (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=816&DwnldID=20775&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility&lang=eng).

Try setting your display settings to 16 bit. I had to do this under Windows ME to get Anim8or to display stuff correctly. Right the desktop and select properties under settings Color Quality set it to 16 bit. Hope it works the same in W7.

Try visiting this link> http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx It looks like a free MS application for getting 32 bit application that won't run under W7 to help get them running again using older legacy drivers and such. Let us know if it works as eventaully we'll all be forced to use a newer OS like W7.

I'm using 7-64 and the only problem I get is some artifacting with the selection tool.  Nothing that affects the functionality, so the OS probably isn't the issue.

If all else fails, there's always the option of running it through a virtual machine (Virtual box).

If you can get hold of a copy of XP, download VMware (free and better than the virtual mode supplied with higher versions of W7 anyway) and install XP on it.  Having said that, the fault you describe does not really sound like a compatibility issue, as Raxx suggested it might be caused by your antivirus software.  I would advise a fresh download of Anim8or, disconnect from the web, switch off all AV software and try running it.

I'll go ahead and mention glDirect here as well, in case it's not the antivirus or some other program. No guarantees it'll work, and it's not really a fix, but I used it in the past with Intel and Vista issues and got somewhat tolerable results. Ultimately I installed XP on a separate partition and used that instead.

There is something you can try, called GLDirect (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Other-VIDEO-Tools/GLDirect.shtml), that basically converts the opengl draw commands to directx, which may allow you to see what's going on. Basically:

1) Install it
2) Restart Windows (you may get some .sys error messages after rebooting)
3) Set the SciTech GLDirect Configuration program to Win 98 compatibility
4) Run it, save the settings
5) Open up Anim8or and see if it worked.

What do you mean by .sys errors? Does it break my PC?

Not at all. I had tested it recently prior to giving out the instructions. The .sys files seem to be dependent files relied on by the wrapper, and so you need to set the compatibility so that they get utilized properly.

Basically Intel Gfx cards don`t work under Windows 7 very well when using Anim8or. I have had a Lenovo Laptop with an Intel Gfx card with the very latest drivers and it refuses to run, and I have been trying on and off for over a year to get it to run without any success. I have tried Compatibility settings Virtual drives etc so they are of no use whatsoever.

My feeling is to steer clear of any intel based laptops if you want anim8or to work.Check out the specs before buying especially the Gfx card

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop with ATI Gfx card running 64BIT Windows7 HP,and that runs no problem, as well as a Desktop using an Nvidia Geforce Gfx card under Windows7 Ultimate.

I would suspect you or I, will never get it to run ( but if you do then please let us know!!)

Microsoft has a free virtual PC software download that supposedly installs a working copy of the XP OS somewhere in W7. Have you tried that?

'Windows XP mode' is a virtual machine provided by Microsoft and is, as you rightly state, not available on Home Premium.  However, Virtual Box and VMware are free, downloadable virtual machines that have nothing to do with Microsoft and work on W7, irrespective of the version you are running.  Honest.  Google is your friend.

PS: I cannot guarantee that this will fix your problem but as they are free downloads surely it's worth a try.  Also, you'll need a copy of XP to load to the virtual machine.

You might also want to check for updated drivers on MS's site using the utilties under my computer>hardware and updating as many system drivers as possible. Intel is on a lot of systems, so I would imagine that MS will address the major issues gathered based on error reporting feedback sent to them; I've had several issues resolved in the past by just sending in the reports and getting directed to 3rd party sites that have solutions available. It also makes me wonder if a command line directive can be set in the icon short cut to force W7 to change the way that the OS interacts with a 32bit app like Anim8or?

All my drivers are up to date. I do not trust unauthorized software, and Compatibility mode and all that wont work!

VMware is totally trustworthy, been around for ages and running without a hitch on my machine (my scanner won't run on W7 and HP won't update the driver.. grrrr).  Obviously I would recommend backing up and setting a restore point before downloading it, that's a no-brainer for pretty much anything you install, 'authorised' or not.  It's probably also worth mentioning that technically Anim8or isn't 'authorised' for MS OS either, neither is Terranim8or, Virtual Dub, Lithunwrap...

111dav12, I'm not sure there's much else that the community can suggest that hasn't already been suggested in this thread.  Sorry the community hasn't been able to resolve your problem, it could be that there is just no way to run Anim8or with your OS/GPU setup.

I meant to say unauthorized software I've never used before.

I'd again suggest to install Anim8or under some operating system under VirtualBox or VMware. If you can't install Windows I would suggest some lighter (yet simply enough for novice to use) variant of Linux either Lubuntu or single CD version of PCLinuxOS + WINE under VirtualBox but I'm not sure while if you're afraid of installing virtualization software and not willing to try out some of out previous suggestions that we'll be able to help you further online.

Another idea is to repartition your drive and install some Linux flavour at the side of your current system, but I think it's not the thing you'd like to do alone. You might look for somebody who knows a bit more about OSes and show this forum thread to him/her so that this person will be able to create for you setup mentioned in this thread. If that person will have more questions please post them this thread. I may be able to help a little bit with the WINE setup, because I was running Anim8or in Linux a while ago.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I just got a new laptop with W7 home and Anim8or runs just fine. Suggest those who have problems running Anim8or to try the option to use the run for XP service pack 3 compatibilty option. I was able to also install ASL Editor too without problems. Leroy: W7 seems to run most 32 bit apps just fine. I also got Truespace 7.61 Beta 8 installed too. Sorry, couldn't resist pimping TS 3d as it's still my favorite modeling software. Leroy.

It appears to be an Intel HD on a Compaq Presario CQ57. Haven't had any problems so far; knock on wood right? I also like the wide screen format layout too. W7, seems to run my 32 bit apps very nicely.
