Title: Disable "Roll" from Arc Rotate?
Post by: wolfsong73 on September 11, 2016, 11:21:25 pm
Hello!

So, I've been having a blast learning this program. It's crazy to think there are tools in here that are missing in $300+ programs. And I haven't even gotten out of the modeling tab yet.

Anyway!

Quick question.. Is there a way to disable the "Roll" part of the Arc Rotate, so there's only the Pitch and Yaw aspect?

It's not a huge deal, but I've always found it disorienting when I can roll the camera/user view. I know you can avoid Roll by starting with the cursor inside the circle. But, I was just wondering if there's a way to toggle off the Roll part altogether. I've looked for an option, but don't see one. Thought I'd ask anyway.

Thanks!

Yes. When you activate the Arc Rotate there are little boxes on the outer circle. grab a left or right one with the pointer ans LMbutton or the top an bottom one and you will lock the motion. Then just drag. Holding the RMButton in the circle lets you drag the object and scroll wheel zooms in or out. I almost never use the arc rotate button because it stay on till clicked again. I use the alt key as I edit to rearrange the screen as I work. When you releast the slt key the arc rotate goes off. Learn the keyboard short cuts they make editing and creating work easier and smoother.

Ahh, well that's a neat trick to know if I only want to rotate it on one axis.

I looked around some more, though, and it looks like there's no option to eliminate the "roll" altogether, so that normal rotation is just pitch and yaw. It's fine, I can work with it. Just something small that would've been neat to have.

Try clicking outside the circle and draging. Forgot that one.

Well, clicking outside the circle is where the Roll happens. It doesn't happen when you click inside the circle. I was looking to disable 'Roll' altogether, so the behavior would always be like it is when you click inside the circle, no matter where you click. More of a "turn-table" type rotation.

Nope, roll can't be disabled; you have to keep the cursor inside the circle. I also wish you could turn it off. I screw up the view all the time because of that.
Tip: When you realise you're rolling, you can still cancel it by dragging the cursor outside the Anim8or window and releasing the button. This works for all modal mouse operations.

Ahh.. good tip! I'm getting used to just making sure I'm always clicking inside that circle, so it'll probably be automatic before long.
