Really outstanding, ronaldefarmer, love it. I'm going to say looks 'slightly floaty' off the ground, which I'm sure you're already perfectly aware of, and obviously it's an out-of-context (scene) render, but I'm just that sort of ass who has to point it out (sorry!). Really incredible work, love the texturing, the lock in particular and the really bright veneer you've created there. Is it slightly varnished? Is it waxed? There's no need to decide! That razor-sharp shard of light on the mid-section corner is superb. Brilliant level of realism.

Sorry Raxx, I just didn't realise how many there were! And how rubbish most of them are. It's like trying to choose your three favourite toenail clippings. Ever.

So anyway, here goes. These may not be my best works, fortunately those usually get finished, but I wanted to try and show a bit of variety.


Gladiator

This was meant to be my entry for the 'Sports equipment' comp. This render was produced the day after the competition deadline, and there was something missing from the middle foreground, but sadly I can no longer even remember what that was. It wasn't a person, that's all I'm sure of.



Prawno / Bullet Streams

Virtually the only piece of 'character animation' I've ever even attempted, I made this initially as a joke among some friends. However, it was revisited a few times, the last of which (2006) was to add a 'bullet stream' effect I created earlier that year via a little program I created in Rapid-Q. A longer sample of the bullet stream included for interest.

Monuments

So this is a collection of 18 world landmarks I created for a game that never got finished (2009). The catch here was I was working as fast as I could. All models were completed within three days, I was using every trick I could think of to get them all done in time. Westminster Palace is just photographs of each angle mapped on to roughly hewn shapes (a la town in Blazzing Saddles), whereas the Cape Town city hall is virtually modelled brick for brick. As I say, not necessarily my best work (and a terrible final render), but I know I learned more in three days than I ever would have any other way, enhanced by the variety of source objects.




Excellent work from everyone else: kreator I notice you're big on the textures too; I'd love to hear what's causing the 'lighting anomaly' in your factory image. I can't get my head around the dark front and the fully-lit balustrade!

I have to correct you on one thing, though: this is definitely a challenge!

Hooray! Thanks Raxx, really looking forward to seeing everyone's unfinished bits and bobs on here.

Only two posts in, and I'm already SO RELIEVED to find it's not just me. So many reasons projects don't get finished, and I used to feel so guilty about them all, sat abandoned in some dark forgotten corner, like a box of unwanted kittens locked in the cupboard under the stairs, their piteous mewin- wait, no, hang on. That never happened.

Really fantastic work from both $imon and Raxx there, clearly two of the best Anim8or users anywhere out there. I remember that rooftop of yours really well $imon, not having seen it for a while certainly brings back a sense of awe. And I can fully understand losing a huge chunk of work. I experienced the 'Deskstar click of death' back in 2003/4 and pretty much lost ... well, everything I'd ever drawn, created, composed, made or written all in one fell swoop. You'd think I'd have learned to back things up properly. You'd think.

Raxx, your organic modelling always amazes me, I've never even been able to get started with that sort of thing. Rob Bottin would be proud!

And what of my own to post? Mmmm (*starts file search*) ...

Okay, so I've no idea if this will interest anyone else, but it's a thought that's been rattling round my head for a while now, and this seems to be the right opportunity.

I have to confess I've not been sufficiently excited by the last few challenges to get involved; I REALLY don't mean any offense, just that they weren't for me.

What I do have, however, is a hard disk filled with frikkin' half finished challenge entries from back when every challenge idea was awesome (again, to me - I'm really not trying to be rude!) and I'd have a thousand ideas of what to submit but I couldn't get any finished because of work commitments/personal projects/house moves/drive failures, etc, etc, etc ('life', as I believe it's commonly known).

How's about, pre-'e' release, we have a spring cleaning, clear-out challenge? Show us what you couldn't get finished, couldn't think how to get finished or went 'wrong' and knocked the wind right out of your sails just because your modifier didn't behave how you expected? I'd say something like three images per user (either vote on independently but only one vote per user, or submit as a set for collective voting - I don't know what the polling mechanism is capable of on SMF).

The only rules would be 'NO WORK'! You can't modify anything from where you left it when you reluctantly let it go and acknowledged quietly to yourself (maybe wiping away a tear of regret) that you weren't going to get it done, you just have to send it in as it stands on your hard drive (or zip or cloud or - heck - floppy). Nice and easy regarding time constraints. And you can't have submitted it as your FINAL entry (WIPs are fine) in any prior comp.

In doing so, we'll all be at the same point before the next release (and yes, boy am I a tad excited to hear a new one's imminent) without any lamenting 'if only I didn't have to sleep', and we can then maybe have some future comps focused on the new features to get everyone learning them?

And that way, we can all vote for Raxx's dragon, like we wanted to in the first place, but couldn't because the blaggard didn't get it done in time. :D

Hi $imon - nice work! I always took the 'black line' to be a toenail/claw/talon (what do robins have at the end of their toes?! Can't decide on the right word.) You can see there's a smaller one out the back too.

An awful lot better than the nonsense they came up with for Sharktopus (a hot contender for the worst film ever made).
Nice design, I like it alot, although it seems as though the spines along its belly would cause a few mobility problems on land. Is the idea that they're 'soft' structures that would press flat as it drags itself along?

Hi MikeslyMontague. All the key types work, the bug seems to be that they don't update until you affect (move/rotate) an element with keyframing ON after you've changed it's key type, which I agree certainly gives the impression of them not working. Anim8or is a [relatively] basic package that hasn't been updated in a very, very long time, but it can do pretty much anything you want it to if you have the patience. I certainly agree that being able to change the default type would help, I think it's presumed to be 'smooth' as it is the most common motion type when you're starting out.

I've never had a problem with bump maps, they've always worked exactly as intended for me. I've done a few tests with high poly models and extreme distortions, but haven't been able to reproduce your results. It does make me wonder about the complexity of your model, though, and obviously I can't tell that just from the output video you've linked.
The only time I've encountered seemingly inexplicable frame-to-frame 'skipping' in a render is when I've had two faces in fairly close proximity, even when they're static - is your head a single mesh (and I mean the actual head model, not the hat, goggles or eyes, etc), or are you using several (two or more) copies of the same mesh at slightly different sizes, each with varying textures (perhaps to improve the realism of the model)? If that's in any way the case, there are both several causes and several solutions.

Hi Daniel
Can't (immediately) help with the first problem, but for the second it sounds like you want to be using 'File' materials, rather than 'Object' ones - there are two buttons at the very top of the material selector. It's on 'Object' by default; press 'File', and any materials you create here will be available to every object within your .an8 file. Any changes to this material, whichever object you are in when making those changes, will show in all instances of that material.
You need to use distinct names, I think if you have a material with the same name as a 'File' material in within a specific object, the object one is used in priority.
Hope I'm not misunderstanding you!
