a lot of house/interiour modellers  use te following 2....Sketchup for modelling and kerkythea for rendering ( kerk has a sketchup plugin)

i use liteunwrap in combination with UVmapper. Map in uv mapper, paint your map. Then import in LiteUnwrap. This last proggie allows you displace your model to fit the painted map more correctly with realtime preview. Very usefull with more complex shapes/models.

Or build primitives....Ngon    create your ngon...Ctrl C   Ctrl V..make the copy a bit smaller ( scale) Join Splines...Fill.

oops..that lloks more complicated then what i had in mind. What would be usefull here is a "duplicate along path "  script.  then you would only need a small segment of the rail and 1 horizontal support and then duplicate. Unfortunately..........
