was the render in Anim8or or Blender?

It's a very nice toon shader though. Reminds me mostly of the style of the Okami console game.

Wow, Infected Kerrigan looks disturbingly 'nice' and a little bit sexy.

I'd say too nice. It's interesting how she looks like a fairy, but she also looks a little weak to me.

Others are all amazing of course.

I'm curious - why are you learning anim8or after Blender? Mainly because I'm going the other way - started anim8or, loved it, and am now trying Blender. I would've thought once you'd mastered all those hidden menus and tiny buttons and right-click selecting you'd thnk it's too much effort to learn anything else :P

can you make it into Ben from Lost? :D

right now it looks more like Sylvester Stallone though.

LOL, though honestly at this stage pretty much every male face looks like every other male face

What is blacksmith and where do I get it? I hate unwrapping models - so tedious and I always screw up somewhere :S

Very nice, nearly perfect.

A couple of complaints
1) the cherry seems a little too shiney. It looks like it's made of glass or polished ceramic.
2) there is a perfectly straight, horizontal line at the top of the stem that is quite distracting. Perhaps a little harsh a criticism, but it would look better from a slightly different angle, or if it was broken into 2 polys and bent slightly.

Still, a beautiful piece of work!

I've been on holiday for 6 months, and this is the first 3D render I've seen. I am completely stunned, thinking "Anim8or doesn't do this.... right?".

Simply amazing job. I've got to agree with some of the posts here, it is really hard to tell what makes some models absolutely stunning compared to the rest. Is it mainly in a good texture? Is it a detailed model (how many polys do you have?)? Is it just making sure that everything is perfect? (meaning no overlapping polys, no sharp changes etc).

Still, whatever it is, your model has it. Though I think I agree the feet should be longer / bulkier.

looks good.

But the wireframe / polycount image isn't working (for me at least). I'm curious to see how much detail is in you model compared to your textures. Your textures are a real inspiration, and I want to see how little modelling you can get away with with such amazing texture work.

That is interesting, and very good.

So you draw the texture before you start modelling? Aren't you worried about texture stretching at the sides of the model, especially where you're only drawing the front and back views.

Still, your results speak for themselves, I'll have to try it that way some time.

Finished Works and Works in Progress / Giant Bird WIP: how to do wings
« on: November 22, 2008, 12:45:07 am »
Hello all,

Here is a model I've been working on in Blender (first one after doing the intro to character animation tutorial). I'm not here to start flame wars or anything, I just find this community far more knowledgable and helpful than a lot of the blender communities I've seen :S

I'm looking for general advice on how to finish the wings of my bird. I'm happy with most of the shape (haven't done rigging / texturing yet), but the back of the wings is a problem for me. I can't get it looking sufficiently 'feathery'. I have tried individually extruding feathers from the back of the wings, but even that didn't look right. At the moment they look more like a fairy shape to me, rather than bird shaped (I think it's just too smooth and regular). Anyone got advice?

I'd recommend not trying to copy Pixar's wireframe. Instead find a rendered shot of Buzz and draw that. Honestly, the Pixar wireframe looks so different from the real thing that even if you copied it perfectly it would look wrong.

Yeah: any 2D editing software is fine, as long as it can create in .jpg format (I think every photo editor can do that).

Photoshop, Paint Shop, Gimp, Even MS paint will work fine, just as long as it can create .jpg files it will work.

problem with that bounce is it's too fast: seems inconsistent with the speed of the rest of the movie. Honestly, at the rate its falling I wouldn't expect it to bounce back up.

Perhaps OpenGL's big red book. It has a different focus (a lot more on the theory and programmng side than modelling itself), but would be very useful to some people.

Yeah, I'm using Gimp for textures too. After pirating an old version of photoshop for about 12 years (the same version of course), I don't think Gimp is anywhere near as powerful or simple to use, but I'm sick of pirating so will persevere.

If only people would charge reasonable rates for programs like photoshop :(

I'm going through the tutorial linked from this post, its getting better.

Drag select is done by pressing b, then the box.

I think this is what's so odd, the buttons themselves aren't what do the work: its all in menus and hotkeys. This means memorising hundreds of hotkeys.

Also, the program seems to have confused the left and right buttons: They have right as 'select' or click, and left to access menus :S
