All I can say is "Holy crap that was awesome!!!"

I'd have to check my books, but it looks like you are modelling a Norfolk Southern Class A.  Consequently, the pilot (the part everyone keeps referring to as the bumper or rammer) was a single cast piece which would explain it's having smooth edges.  A lot of last generation American steam had large single castings like this.  you can easily get lost in the details with something like this.  I am working on a model of a 100 foot motor yacht, and the more I work on it, the more fine detail I add.  right now, I'm trying to decide if I want to go into modelling the interior cabins.  Keep up the good work

If you want the best reference, without having to keep pausing the movies, check out your local toy store for a small Buzz Lightyear toy (should be less than $10).  In my opinion reference images never match up to a physical object, especially when trying to get a look from that tricky angle that the camera always seems to miss.  Even George Lucas still uses maquettes for the CG objects in Star Wars.

I'm always wary of "please help - big production - no pay" postings. ...especially when they misspell "chief".  How is it they can afford to produce such a movie, yet not pay for such a little animation job?

Why doesn't anybody ever offer to pay from the profits after release?
It's like people think that since Anim8or is free and most of us do this as a hobby, we shouldn't expect to be compensated for something Hollywood pays millions for.

I once designed and setup a website for a friend for free. They never delivered what I asked for, were always late providing material, or could never clearly define what they wanted. ...biggest waste of time ever, and the last time I did something like that for free.  After I was done, I realized that for all the headache, I could have made at least $500

I think the blade looks good as is. It looks like a ceramic blade from Kyocera. Even the handle is the right shape, although it should be black, instead of woodgrain

You've definitely gotten farther than I would have. I hate modelling organics. I might model an aircraft carrier down to the last padeye, but I hate dealing with all those subtle curves and proportions...even with cartoon characters.

Only thing that I would change is the shoes. I can't exactly put a finger on it, but they somehow don't fit with the overall look of the rest of the character.  The later version is definitely an improvement over the early "balloon-toe" ...almost looks like a "Saturday Night Fever" version of Ronald McDonald's shoes...

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / Next full version?
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:21:44 pm »
Steve, any idea when you plan to release the next full version, instead of a preview or beta? I just noticed that the last full version on the download page is 95c, but the preview is up to 97d.
So far, I haven't had any major issues with the previews and it's like Christmas day when a new preview comes out, I'm just trying to get a handle on your release strategy (or lack thereof  ;D)

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / Detach Face bug
« on: September 24, 2008, 10:34:27 pm »
Had this issue pop up while working with a high-res model...

When trying to detach faces, Anim8or just closes.   ...no errors or messages of any kind, no lockup, it just closes. I tried with different models, and it appears to only happen when trying to detach a large number of faces.  Not sure how many faces - first noticed it when working on a 50,000+ face object.  ...had at least 10,000 faces selected...

Took a low-res model and subdivided the faces a couple times to make it high res, detached half the faces, and  ->POOF<-  Anim8or closes.

Antialiasing works on the 2D image, but it sounds like you want to antialias the 3D object.  based on that, I agree with almost cool about rendering

General Anim8or Forum / Re: How do you make an object glow
« on: September 05, 2008, 08:41:41 pm »
It might be helpful to clarify what you mean by "glow".  Do you mean self-illuminate or have a glowy halo or corona around  it? the self-illumination would be easy, just create a material using the "Emissive" attribute.   If you want a corona, that is a little more complicated, because the corona you see when you look at the sun is a result of atmospheric diffusion among other things.

Kind of reminiscent of a ME-262...without the engines.   Is it original, or did you use a reference? If you need a cheap reference, pick up a good R/C model airplane mag like RC Modeller or a mag like "Wings". They usually have good 3-views and the R/C mags also have "blueprints" for featured aircraft which give a good example of how an airfoil is shaped dihedral, etc.

Not too bad for a first time, especially with textures and everything.  Most first timers don't texture.  One question though, did you intend the ship to be larger than the planets?

I still don't think it's that hot.   To me, it looked like they tried to map a CG texture over a live actor, kind of like they did with "The Mummy" to create the half-desiccated, half-regenerated scenes.  ...there's still somethign a little stiff or plastic to the movements.  If I didn't know this was CG, I would have thought she had way too much plastic surgery or Botox, and her face was partially paralyzed.

..as far as the best CG to date, it is a toss up.  So many movies go for a stylized look, there are few that try for true photorealism.  Shrek and the PIXAR movies are all stylized and cartoony.  Final Fantast VII: Advent Children has a dreamy, androgynous, anime look.    My vote would have to to go the new Star Wars trilogy for most photo-realistic, even though there weren't really any CG humans

General Anim8or Forum / Re: Can we put 3d above a movie or a picture.

I think feejo and Bmer are asking 2 different questions, confusing things.  It sounds like feejo is refering to using a reference image, although I don't understand what he means by  "I mean I can slice it into all kind of jpg after all".

...Bmer on the other hand sounds like he wants to morph a 2D image to create an animation. ...similar to photo morphing tools where you place reference points on 2 images, to morph a picture of your dog into your cat. ...or move the reference points on a single image to create a goofy, distorted picture of someone.
