@$imon's basketball: I actually thought that was a real picture before I clicked on it and zoomed in. =] Good job. Smiley

Johnar; Great start on your badminton set.. I love that sport! You were probably already planning this, but you can easily add a transmap to the 'feathers' of the shuttle to make them more feathery!

Kubajzz.. great shape you have going on! Just a note; you might want to make a seam in the front part, the nose moves seperately from the back of the sleigh in a lot of occasions.
Bobsleighs are usually covered in a nice carpaint-like material.. check the new dotan8 for some tips Wink not that you need it.. just making advertisement here.

 I've modelled the strings. Wasn't till i'd finished that i thought about using a graph for a reference to keep them all even. duh.
I'll even them up soon.
 The 3rd pic i added a logo to the strings, but not sure if i like that much.
 We got snow in New Zealand, but don't see any bobsleighs around this neck of the woods.
 Looks like yours would hoot along. Smiley Do they wax the bottom of those, like a surfboard?

 Thats what i love about these things. Now i gotta find out about transparencey maps. Wink. I'm not 100 percent sure on what is a transmap. Is that like, the alpha channel? I don't think i've ever used them!. In the past i've used environment maps, and fiddled with the transparecey, an use chromokeying in video editor, but can't honestly say that i've ever used a 'transparencey map.
Hav looked in the manual,but can't see an explanation there, (did i miss it?), and nothing in the search here for transmap. (except your post $imon. Smiley )
  To tell you the truth, I'd love to know what a transparencey map is.  Cheesy  lol. Honest. Any hints?
 But apart from that, $imon, i was going to ask, do you use free uv mapper, by steve cox.? I gotta get my head around that. Making decent, well fitting UVs.
 Its such an important thing for getting a really decent result.
 (and lights too of course, shadows, reflection etc.).

yea johnar a transmap is a different name for an alpha map.. transmap = transparency map, so it controls the transparency. In white areas of the map a surface is shown, in black areas of the map the object is transparent. Watch out though that this extra detail doesnt show up in shadows.. so you might want to add very soft shadows.
Also, you might want to turn off the specular in your material, since invisible parts will have a specular in some cases.
I hope that makes sense.

for UV mapping i use 3d studio max' built in uv mapper.. it is very easy to use and has a lot of features. the free Uv mapper should be sufficient to get a good uv map . Its always good to look into it!

The letter in the racket looks good, i would keep it!

Oh, thanks! Honestly, I don't know anything about bobsleighs, I've only seen one standing in the middle of a shopping mall here in the city... Now you told me about the front and back being separated I googled some more information and it looks like I have some more work to do Smiley

As for the material, I was thinking about reflections like that... I really enjoyed your tutorial by the way Wink

Everything is looking really great guys. $imon I couldn't help but wonder, was the raised bump appearance of the basketball a bump map or did you model it? It looks really good.

Alright I finished my entry.. Got a bit lazy and just added the basketball to the scene I already had. Some post-production for the colors in photoshop.

A grand total of 66 lights in this scene by the way.

edit: added some focal blur for better scaling

Hot damn!  66 lights?  Why would you do that to yourself? (and your computer!)  Beautiful image of course.  I'm a bit interested in why you used so many lights.  Where you attempting GI?

Hiho; In the attached image you can see a setup of the render, the ceiling lights were fully emissive squares to reflect the lights, but to produce a shadow i had to make 8 lights with soft shadows on the complete surface to simulate a square lightsource. Do that times 6 for all the ceiling lights. Then I added the window planes and lights for that, and reflective lights off the walls from a 'sun' shining in the locker room. Add a few environmental lights to that and we get to 66 Wink

It wasnt too bad on me or the renderer, I copied quite a few lights in the source of the .an8 files so I didnt have to make them all myself. The render only took 7 hours so my computer is still alive haha

$imon you are the king of realism. great job.

and for johnar. i think you should model the top (frilly part) of the birdy ( or shuddle cock (depends on where your from)). then transmap the bulk of it. im not that good at texturing but i think that might b the best way to do it.

kuba, i dont think any of us really know what a bobsled is exactly sposed to look like so i think your safe if you miss some key points to it. "one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, go go go" -cool runnings. (i think thats what they say)

 I can't work out the transmaps from the manual.  Huh

 But am quite glad i modelled them in the end.
