Either one's fine, Gyper. ;)

But I love the final result. :D
The first one does actually look more realistic, and maybe a bit better.

Good job!
And, Floyd: Great! I love it. :)

I promise I will enter the next challenge. ;)

??? Doesn't it take longer to render with AO than without it? ??? And what's the attribute for the glass, dielectric or transparent?

Like Janrp said: I rendered one pass (the normal pass) with the textures and shadows on and no AO. And a second pass with no textures and no shadows and only AO (below). The material for the glass is dielectric, with IOR at 1,33.

Here are the passes I used: a normal pass with textures and shadows, an AO pass, Depth pass for the DOF blur and an alpha pass for the background.

This is definitely the most difficult contest to vote on so far, if I had five votes to cast they would be too few to honour the amazing standard of the submitted entries.  It's great to see different takes on the theme, and the level of detail, integrity of the modelling, and 'theatricality' is, in most cases, stunning.  Well done ladies and gentlemen, top quality stuff.

Yes, ENSONIQ, this is a hard one to vote for!

I voted, though. :)

May I ask, floyd, how you do these "passes" and put them together? What's the point and how do you do it?

May I ask, floyd, how you do these "passes" and put them together? What's the point and how do you do it?

It's easy to make these passes. The normal one is just a normal render. The depth and alpha pass you choose to render along with your normal render: go render>render image and in the frame spec editor you can choose image, alpha channel or Image + alpha channel. Here you can also choose to render a Depth channel (normally I use a z near and far of 50-1000). The AO pass is a bit more complicated. I give al the objects in the scene the default gray material only with the specular value at 0. In scene mode you delete all the lights and at the AO attribute (object>attributes -->name: AmbientOccluder with int 1). Then go settings>lighting and set the global to 0 and the ambient to 3. Now render you scene at an AA value of at least 64 and you AO is done.

Now you will have 4 different images. I use photoshop to combine them. The AO for the soft shadows and contrast. The depth pass for the depth of field blur (all the white will be blurred and the black not). The alpha pass can be used to change the background of your image.
The separate passes will give you much more control and allows you to tweak the effect it has. It also lowers the render time since not everything has to be calculated the same time.

Hmm... That all makes sense, I guess, but I already knew how to render depths and alphas, etc. ;)

I just don't get how you "combine" them... How is that possible..?

Thanks for the info! I might try that the next time I open Anim8or. (I know...I haven't opened it in a while, but I have been fiddling with Cre8or!)

You will need some basic knowledge of photoshop or other 2d painting software to understand. You can use the rendered images as layers on top of each other to compose your final image. Each of this layers you can adjust it's setting like blending mode, contrast, transperancy etc.

Oh, I have PhotoShop and am very good with it. Should have said that before. :P

Just layers, then..?
Hmm...
