Looking good for a first project Matthew, could add some detail to those planes then zoom into them a little more ...
but good so far.
Edit: was looking at the animation at work so couldnt really see what it was but now i can see its a space scene!! might help with a starfield. Is the planet Earth? if so an earth texture wouldn`t go a miss.
Try using VirtualDub for compositing instead of the trial avs (virtuladub is free and does not have an annoying watermark!)

Tryout some particle effects from terrani8or. They are easy to use and makes things look more realistic.

Good job. I like your camera work. The panning and timing work just right. Like the others mentioned, you could find textures that would make the planet nicer and the space background could use a stars.
Keep it up

I like the way the craft hurtles toward the planet, and how it soars into the atmosphere.
A star field would be good for the background of the space scene.
Also, you might want to see that the planet object does not receive shadows - check that in "Scene" mode... because, obviously, a planet is MUCH larger than any craft in your scene, and would not likely show a shadow from anything short of a moon in size.
Off to a good start!

Very good, I like how the jet popped out of the ball. But the shadow issue is true, it shouldn't show a shadow on the planet. If you are using the ART, you can't just set the shadow on or off for the object, so you could just move the light over a little bit. A starfield would be nice to, and would greatly increase the quality of your movie. A layer of clouds over the planet would be useful to, especially if it's not earth, you have the craft go by thick clouds after all. Great animation though, the movements are spot on!
