gmax is/was a 3D modelling program akin to 3ds, but lacking any animation abilities. I first got into 3D by being introduced to gmax for making mods for the game SimCity 4. I then discovered anim8or when I wanted to try something for animation, and not just still models. gmax is a very well-developed program for 3D modelling in any case.
