I edited and made a few high res textures, then layered them on a sphere.
I was mostly screwing around seeing what would come ot and here it is.

Comment please ( :

Render time around 30 sec,
time spent around 3 hours, tweaking out stuff and editing textures.

cooldude234:
It didn't upload the second one for some reason, well heres the other one.

$imon:
nice work for a quick image! Just a few physical errors: the side of the earth that is in shadow is completely black, no light bounces off something to light up that side of the earth. A cool effect might be to have light of cities show up (though I don't know how accurate it is that you would see that from such a distance)

Also, the water color might be a bit too light IMO (but i haven't been up there to check what it looks like, so one can only guess!)

I  like the glow you made around the planet!

Good luck

3D Joe Wiltshire:
Awesome work! so much better than my first earth attempt, I love the glowing and the high def texture is definitely a plus :D

cooldude234:
Thanks guys  :D,
$imon, about the light from the cities, that is there in the first image, it just blends in with the clouds though.
I wanna soon animate some planets with stars if it keeps turning out this easy (I thought it would be harder), but as long as you have a good texture with bump maps and everything it looks pretty good.

P.S. I love the documentary Planet Earth, it was their renderings of earth that made me try it for my self
