When I add a custom explosion or fire to my seen it is not visible. When i render it though it looks great, why?

Either your graphics card doesn't support realtime transparency maps or you just have them to turn on the view preferences.  To do this, go "view>preferences..." and check the "transparency" and "textures" in the OpenGL section.
