Yea gimp is probably your best bet for a GOOD FREE bitmap editor. If you can find it and can pay money I suggest Fireworks 8 (the one that Macromedia made before adobe bought it out and tore it to shreds (using the word 'shreds' to describe a bunch of hateful and mean words towards adobe (adobe did the same to flash which Macromedia also made (on a side note, RIP Macromedia one of the greatest software companies ever (maybe I should stop with these brackets now))))).
