i just stumbled across a website with an opensource raytracer. wouldn't it be easier for steve to just take some parts of those codes? or is that against GNU?

Really, I though caustics was the concentration of light on a surface when refracted and reflected through a transparent object such as glass.
Also, light changing color and illuminating another surface as it passes through or bounces of the first surface is Diffuse Interreflction, both have to do with GI.

I don't know what are these GNU and GI
What are they?
:) My last doubt here in this post...

The Internet is your friend. Got a question? Type it into your browser's Search line, and you can take your pick of what "might" be the answer. Of course, it's up to you to determine whether the context is pertinent. In this case, we've been referring to programming and 3D illustration. So, just filter out what's not related to those topics.
And, to give you a more direct answer, here's where you can find out about GNU: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU. More specificallly, the references to GNU, above, are the "Project," which is related to free software, as opposed to the original Operating System.
GI is "Global Illumination," and I'll let you search the web for an explanation of that (BTW Wikipedia is a good place to start for that one, too!)
