Latest Update:
Hey Guys! Long time since I posted a project.. here is the reason why;
I've been modeling an Audi TT, my favorite road car. I'm usually not a big fan of modeling cars in 3d, but I wanted to try to push anim8or to the limit with a model/render, and thought a car would be the way to go with the features available in anim8or at this moment in time.
I'll start off by posting the final image.
It doesnt have fresnel reflections since the car paint come straight out of anim8or.

Here is a clay render
(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7696/claywm.jpg)
Rendered in Art in about 10 different renders, layered together in photoshop.
I've combined the layers in such a way in photoshop that I can change the color of the car quite easily, with a solid color or a combination of colors, like this yellow and orange paint job:
This has a fresnel reflection

Here are a few shots of the model inside anim8or:
For who is interested, I kept track of all the render times, it totaled at almost 100 hours.
I'm thinking about making a little video about the model, I can't make it in full color/shading of course, with 100 hours/frame. I'll have to figure something out if i want to do that..
Any comments are welcome! Hope you enjoy it.
-
OH, btw, here is a detail shot of the brake dish.. I might make some more detail renders later on, render times are a bit slow so it can take a while.

O.O
That is INCREDIBLE work, really top-notch. :)
-
:o
Sweet jesus $imon. I was convinced that was your reference at first then I read your post. Honestly, especially with Anim8or... brilliant job mate. Simply brilliant. You've definitely just set another limit people can aspire to in Anim8or. Truly amazing stuff.
My jaw is dropped.
-
Wow!!! :o :o
That car is hottt!
Any 3d artist out there would definitely give that a 10 out of 10!!!
Hey I'm also not a big fan of modeling 3d cars but it's like u said u gotta push anim8or to the limits! :)
-
Awesome stuff! 15 stars out of 10, that's all I can say.
-
Awesome job, $imon! Just goes to show ya that anything's possible given enough time and patience.
-
Wow, I'm speechless! This has to be one of the greatest things I've ever seen made in anim8or, wow, just wow.
-
:[ ] woah. I'm speechless... it looks real/professional. you should send this to Audi just to see what they do.
-
I LOVE IT, can I marry your car?
Just as a question, how did you get the edges so perfect, when I make my vehicles, I always end up making somthing a little bumpy? If you know what I mean
-
Wow thanks guys for the great responses. I'm glad you all liked it!
davdud: I'm afraid they wouldn't be impressed at Audi .. I will have to improve quite a bit for that to happen.
cooldude; Mostly it is experience with smooth surface modeling, a hint i can give you is this: I poly-model everything, I start with lining out a large segment (say draw a line from one side of the hood to the other side, then cut it in half, adjust that poly to the angle it should be, then refine further. So start with the rougher shape and smooth it out from there.
-
but this...is so perfect... I mean, it looks real.
-
yea ur a badass.
but i think if we wanna get technical you have some triangles there.
but whats good is good. (thats what i say anyway)
so did u tetxure it all, or is that in post production? u mentioned u figured out an easy way to change the car color on the fly. + u said u had 10 different renders. either i have alot to learn or im doing it wrong cause u make everything look so much better.
anyway great job on the model. the onlything ic as an easy fix is by the windows. theres way 2 much going on by the tires and the break pads for me 2 even look at it. great job.

This is exactly what I would have said.
Truly amazing work, $imon! :D I don't think anyone will top that for a while. Have you sent it to Steve for the gallery?
Keep it up, I've always been a fan of your work.

davdud; haha tnx.. it can still get more realistic though! (something I admire: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=132&t=749021 )
Heh thanks rellik..
Triangles... On the whole car there is a total of 4 triangles (except the headlights or windows, which arent subdivided), all placed there by lack of alternative ;) If it is correct they dont effect the flow of the model.
I had to render it in several passes (the whole car without shadow, and a pass with only shadows) for the sake of render times. In photoshop I can change the color that goes beneeth the shadow/reflection layer, which essentially changes the color of the car.
Thanks 3Dgeek! The gallery would be an honor I think one should be invited to ;)
-
$imon, I don't agree with your taste in cars and I especially don't agree with your taste in colour of cars, but that's truely exceptional work as always. Well done, really nice job.
Don't be waiting for an invitation to send this to the gallery as it really doesn't work that way - or consider this an invitation from the community if that helps!
-
Mills; thanks for the compliment.. I can understand that someone might not like that car, but thats totally up to them.. don't worry. (I would never have a yellow car though- if that is what you are referring to, haha.. It was just an illustration)
The thing is there are already two images in the gallery of which I am very proud so I don't think there is a need to overrepresent my work in there ;)

{my mouth will now no loner open.}

I actually like that car, and the yellow version of it.
Although, I fell in love with a car I used to see at a store. It was pink, and was white inside, and I just loved it. Didn't know anything about cars back then, so I have no idea what it was, but it looked sort of like $imon's car.
Also, to compliment $imon once more, I love that avatar you have. Never knew where it was from until I looked back at the Wonderland challenge. :P

Rellik: A quick note on triangles for you. Though I'm sure you've heard a lot of things (never use triangles, etc.), triangles are really perfectly acceptable. In the art of 3D the real rule is "whatever works and whatever looks good." For a car model in particular, triangles will not make much of a difference as long as there are no deformations in the mesh because of the triangle. With organic models on the other hand, people avoid triangles. The reason for this is that they don't deform as well as quads, and when you animate an organic model joints tend to bend, and if triangles are involved you can get bad deformations when animating which nobody wants because it doesn't look good! Then on the other hand (to confuse you more!) in games you use nothing but triangles. Many people model in quadrilaterals (many times to help with high poly models to create normal maps), but ultimately the model will always be converted into ALL triangles. That's just how videogames work! Triangles are the simples to render. Therefore you have to make it in such a way that the model doesn't deform when animated (though this is a bit easier as the models aren't subdivision meshes.)
I hope that helps the subject a bit for you!
$imon: Still man, damn! You've been keeping this piece of beauty a secret from us just to make us wet ourselves haha, well done. I'd love to see those detail shots (and maybe a shot of the back of the car as well?) Truly brilliant mate.
-
This makes me sad...
Heh, how do you get SO much detail?
-
simon, suprising as always! Again a brilliant piece of work. It's indeed more of an honour to get invited for the gallery, but consider this one worthy! goed werk! ;)
-
Once again $imon, an absolutely brilliant piece of work. This is testament to what can be achieved through patience, skill and a supreme attention to detail. There are no shortcuts to creating something of this calibre, just an unwillingness to accept anything other than perfection. Well done mate!
-
davdud: impressive, isnt it ;)
3dgeek; I'm glad not everyone thinks its hideous haha.. Cars really are subject to taste a lot, so one cant do anything but to follow his own taste ;)
Glad you like my caterpillar! Was fun to make.
hihosilver; Thanks for giving the whole triangle-speech ;) It's a tough issue for a lot of people to comprehend.
Sorry I kept it under the radar, I know that once I start showing something, I won't finish it!
I'm working on a shot from the back now, so thats on its way.. The detail shots might be coming after that! So stay tuned.
Meep; I hope I didnt make you sad! :( The amount of detail is not thát high... but I set a bar for myself and modeled every single piece until I had the same amount of detail on the rest (bolts, beveled edges, smooth surfaces)
Floyd; dankje.. I'll look into the gallery thing.. Maybe when I have all the renders done!
Ensoniq; thanks for the compliments! means a lot coming from you! Hard work and patience indeed.. now if I only had talent ;)
-
Alright the render of the back of the car is done;
-
it pretty much perfect. the only thing i see wrong is some spots look jumpy. almost like u dont have anti analisis on. especially under the rear window i see the inconcistany. thats most likely the renderer. it might even be the jpeg format. but what ever it is it needs fixed.
unless u can get the pic like its from a regular camera ( im sure if any1 you can) you can fix it with a photo editing program. those wavy lines just ruin it for me. its like 99.9% near perfection.
-
those wavy lines just ruin it for me.
That sounds very dramatic hahaha... the aliased edges are because of the composition out of multiple layers in photoshop. Using an alphamap from anim8or to combine layers in photoshop never fits perfectly. On the edges of surfaces the AA shows. The only way to fix this is if I would go into photoshop and manually erase tiny bits of the sides of the alpha maps... which will take Very long haha.. I don't really feel like doing it, but I can see where you come from.
Ill look to see if there is a way around doing that.
edit: I went past the edges with a slight blur in photoshop (a little bit cheating) and I uploaded the new picture.. hope its better

Amazing work!!
-
Perfect ;) Let's show the world what is Anim8or capable of ! \m/
-
Congratulations $imon and thank you that you show us the way to follow! Your amazing works give me inspiration and make me go forward 8)

car render of the year
-
Ha? Wow this is phenomenal. Did your girl go away for a year?
I think you are in the wrong job :)
But seriously (looks in dictionary). Superb, wonderful, sleek and definitely a pro job.
We all hate you $imon. :) :)
-
Heh thanks guys!!
kreator; there doesn't seem to be much attention to anim8or on there...
headwax; My girl is not here, thats true haha.. otherwise i would never get anything done ;) Fortunately theres skype.
Thanks for your hatred! Well received.
I'm going to make a render in a bit of an environment; a tunnel. Heres a WIP on what I'm working on, no need to comment since most of the image is under construction. Ideas are very welcome though!
Greetings

Simon, been eyeballing this thread... not sure how I missed it... but like everyone else, I just can't say anything except things like "WOW! PHENOMENAL!" If this doesn't rate worthy of hte anim8or gallery, nothing does!
-
Heh thanks so much, buddy! Maybe you'll like this update too.
It's finally done rendering for this scene.. So here's what I came up with;

Amazing render!
-
Thanks neirao ;) :D
-
Really an amazing render simon. A masterpiece!
-
I'd like to know how to view the attachments... I can't seem to look at them unless they are shone in message... :( I'd like to see the picture.
-
Thanks so much Floyd!
Hm, that is weird, DragonSlayer.. I uploaded these images to imageshack, maybe you can't view them for some reason. I will attach the image to this message, maybe you can see it than.
-
I'm on a school computer, and all the image searches are blocked... even Google Images. That's what happens when kids look at things they shouldn't, they ruin it for everyone.
HOLY COW $imon, that car is amazing! I don't get the previous complaints on the 4 triangles you have. IT LOOKS GREAT. Something interesting you could do though, if you wanted to make it look 3D to the user, render a left and right camera picture to scale as if they are eyes (stereo doesn't work well), aim them at the same spot with a target. Take the two renders, put the right on the left and the left on the right, and then the onlooker crosses their eyes to get a perfect 3rd center image. THEN YOU COULD DRIVE IT OFF!!!!!!! (Though it looks like you could all ready!!!) ;)
-
I'm glad you could see it now, DragonSlayer.. I hope you get the chance to see the other images in here as well..
Here is a quick stereo view.. it is a fun effect.. not sure about an animation though haha!
-
I CAN'T REACH THE DOOR!!! ;D
-
Incredible work, the tunnel scene is beautiful.
-
How do you created soo cool lights ?
