Here is a saloon that I am working on for the anim8or newb project My main goal is to build the entire western town. How many buildings are in a small western town? It is not yet completed and you can tell it needs alot of work but I will be happy to take any c and c

ENJOY!!! ;D

Looks good at first sight, some nice textures you used. Would you like to show us some other views and maybe a wireframe.
An stereotype oldfashion western town is mostly just one street with around 10 houses or so. Atleast thats how I see an real cowboy town. With a saloon and a sherriffs office and some shops.
-
woah!where did you find those great textures! by the way...in lots of cartoons my cousins watch there are about 6-12 buildings aligned to make a single street in a town..but for realism...i don't really know.(possibly 30 buildings scattered about.maybe some very primitive that are far from the cameras view)
-
Looks good so far.
C&C:
Shingles: They look rather shiny and metallic. Is this intended?
Saloon Doorway: To me this looks WAY too wide.
As to your question about how amny buildings, well, being the Old West you pretty much have a free hand to make it as big or as small as you like. Most of those places started off as tiny mining camps of one kind or another and grew or died from there.
Looking very good so far, I too would like to see some other angles. :)
-
It rendered nice,Could you tell me where you got the textures from?
And I know that old western towns have a Saloon,Bank,some Houses,Mabye a Gun Shop,and a Tailor(I think thats how u spell it)
-
im not a people person73 & EcoTyler: I found the textures here http://www.cgtextures.com/textures.php (http://www.cgtextures.com/textures.php) CG textures is an awesome website. And to make them look more realistic I used Pixia. Here is a quick video on how I did that process, it can be found here and the video is called Using Bumpmaps http://two.xthost.info/RnDrFOX/ (http://two.xthost.info/RnDrFOX/)
floyd86: I will post some more pics in a little bit and it will include the views that you requested.
Olias: I will work on the doors the reason why they are so wide is because of the opening also on the roof how do you make it look more weathered and not metallic since it is just a texture and a bumpmap.
And I thanks on giving me a number on how many houses I should have ;D
-
That's a decent start to the saloon you have there RnDr FOX. Right now the main issue seems to be the size ratio of things. I'm not sure if the shingles there are the roof. If they are, it's MUCH too low. Remember to keep in mind that people want to walk in these buildings. So try to get the door a realistic size, where the two swinging doors are also realistic in comparison (as Olias said, the door is a bit too wide right now.) You also want to keep in mind that the ceiling needs to be a good deal above the doorway, and the roof would go above that.
I like that tutorial, I'm sure people will find it useful.
One tip in there I'd like to add though, bumpmaps don't have to be straight black and white. They can be grayscale. The darker black something is, the more it will be indented, the whiter it is, the more it will be bumped out.
-
Pretty good if you raise the roof somewhat.
I'm a fan of old cowboy movies and when they enter a saloon they have at least their head above the top of the door sometimes even their shoulders.
A tall cowboy in your town would bump his head against the roof to get a drink ;)
-
I love the saloon and the textures. I agree with lynn 22 pheraps raise the roof a little bit. And also what would be good, is to shwo us the enviroment inside the saloon (Cowboys, tables, drinks). That would be impressive btw.
-
You could also model some railings and some old barrels and put them in front of it,I would love to see if/when you make the town,It should be awesome,And thanks for the website,I love the textures from it :)
-
Looks cool
As someone has mentioned above the doors are too wide
Also a western town would have primarly
Saloon
Bank
Sherifs Office
Tailor
Hardware Store
Black Smith
Horse Stables
Post Office(Some times intergraded with the saloon)
I would scatter the buildings around don't make them on one Strip like Las Vegas. Also most of the buildings should have a porch like walk way an a Horse Rail in front of them with watering barrles or troffs.
-
Wow,Nice steal of my post :-\
-
i know this is slightly irrelevent but its spelled trough not troff ;)
-
Well I am glad you all know you grammer ;)
Also sorry I have not posted anymore pics but my computer is giving me trouble and I am trying to troubleshoot it
For more info on my problem look at the low virtual memory post that I made on the .97 preview thread
-
grammar is the study of sentance structure i know how to spell ;)
-
*cough* that's sentence structure *cough*... ;)
-
Everyone please get back on topic. Do not start a flame war on this forum, it's disrespectful to the thread starter, and childish as well.
Back on topic, I hope you can get the saloon file working with your computer. It had good potential.
-
I got my computer to work *YAY* Well here is the latest version of my saloon and like I said I will take c & c on it so have at it ;D
Also what is the easiest way to make a chain link so I have something to hold up the signs and I also dont like how the barrel turned out so i will fix it any ideas on how to do that and to top it all off I forgot to add windows :-[ one more thing, this render uses scaline and when I tried ART I got these unnecessary shadows how do I get rid of them? So what do you think
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn258/RnDrFOX/UnfinishedSaloon2.jpg)
ENJOY ;D

RnDr FOX, nice progress there on the saloon. It'd be nice to see more than just a front view though, perhaps a perspective view? The door looks better, but the roof still needs to be raised up a good deal. The building size needs to be increased as well. Think about walking in there, right now, one person could fit through the door, then one person on the right and one on the left. That's not much room considering there's probably a bar inside. That would be a pretty cramped saloon! So I'd advise you increase the wall sizes by a lot. Remember you want to keep this realistically sized to a human.
Now, as for your question about chain links, I'd go about it by just copy/pasting and rotating. So you can create a single simple chain link, then rotate it 90 degrees around the y-axis. Then move it down to where it would rest on the previous link. You can then copy/paste this double link, and drag it down again, you can continue this until you have a length you want. That would by my method.
As for the ART renderer, shadows are default right now, Steve forgot to turn them off. So, in the next Anim8or update they shouldn't be automatically on. But, sadly right now, the shadows will stay.

For a chain you can use the torus-plugin at the scripts link left. When using the method hihosilver suggested it will give you a nice chain, a bit high poly maybe. A good transmap will do too if it isnt to much at the foreground.
The saloon look fine, but the proportions seem a bit of. Take a good look at reference images of saloon like this one: http://www.jolly-jumper.nl/saloon3.gif .
-
a good way to make individual chain links is to use the torus script and the non-uniform scale tool to make kind of a hollow elipse then use hihosilvers method.
if you don't have the torus script then click Build>primitives>N-gon enter a value of 30-60 then draw out the circle of how large you want the diameter of the chain link to be. now draw another N-gon using the same method make this one as large as you want the chain link to be click Build>extrude then select path in the "axis" box then click ok and click the larger circle. your chain like should appear if you cant figure out how to do this i can make and post a small chain.
-
Good Saloon there! The textures are good, like the title! The black behind the doors is my only crit, you could change that for an image or something showing the interior of the building. :)
-
Nice saloon and name you got there FOXY. Here is a chain I made a while back I will mail it to you.
It may be a bit on the large side but it should scale down ok.

Just an idea: If you've got a Wii check out Rayman Raving Rabbids it has a mini game where you shoot plungers in a western style town and has some great cowboy towns, buildings and scenes.
May help, may not, may be worth a look, If I can get some screen shots I'll post them.

Ok I am real sorry that I have not been updating my highly anticipated saloon :P I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on it since it is almost the end of the school year and a lot has been going on so here is just a real quick work that I have done on it. I will post more pics like from different angles and wire frame and much more. I just did this real quick to see if I got the proportions right so don't worry this weekend I will post much more pics with much more progress, so tell me if I finally got the proportions right this time since that is the only thing i am really aiming for in this post. Also are the windows ok or do they need some work?
ENJOY ;D
-
It's looking better every time.
For the windows I would suggest to make them 3 panes wide and narrow the space in between.
Also the windows texture, which is really nice, should be shifted so as to show a frame around the panes and moved upwards to avoid the little bits at the top and show a full pane at the bottom..
-
i agree with lynn22 about the windows, maybe also make them semi-transparent (might want to make a trans map to keep the frames opaque)? also the roof still looks quite low.
looking forward to seeing more angles :)

*edit*
300th post... wow. i really have been talkative, no? :D
-
Good progress but still what about the black behind the door, I think it would look wads better with an image behind it. It gives a sense of atmosphere so to say, makes it look more real
-
Looks good - who cares if you can spell - can you model? That's wut we r here 4!
-
Yes onespirit5777, but to make it in the world, also to make it in any business you need to come off professionally. Nobody will consider hiring you if "u strt tlking lyke this." Neither will people respect you. Speaking that way you sound younger and less experienced. If you put on a professional image, people will treat you more professionally and with more respect. That's a reason to not blow off English class as well. Perhaps you wont be writing full fledged essays in the future, but the class teaches you to write professionally for when you're in the business world even if all you're doing is writing up your portfolio or sending an email to a potential client.
-
Nice progress Foxy
You could maybe add an interior to give the model added depth and make it visable through the saloon doors.
Looking good ;D
-
Looking great! Like the others have said, the roof is a bit low, you want to have at least a foot between the frame and the roof. The same also goes for the windows; they look great, but need to be seperated from the roof. A frame around them would be helpful. I have to agree with thecolclough, a transparancy map would give them transparancy, while leaving the framing around the glass opaque. I love your work so far, and hope that my suggestions help.
P.S. Does the quota (15 MB) at that CG Textures site reset every day?

i believe it does :)

How about a perspective shot, so we can see the whole building? By the way, you may want to make the windows wider.
...Edison didn't perfect the lightbulb until 1879, so for the 1800s and most of the 1900s buildings had large windows to allow a lot of light in, especially in the front. ...also, when a fight breaks out, you want nice big windows for people to get knocked through. ;)
If you want a good idea of what a western town looked like, check out some model railroad magazines or websites. Most model railroaders stick to the late 1800s, or the 50s and 60s, and they model down to the trash in the alley! ...most towns actually had a lot more buildings than you would think. Just check out this map of Calico, Ca: http://www.calicotown.com/townmap/ the map includes modern additions (they didn't have Bus parking in 1881), but most of it is the original town.
It is only in the movies or little flea-speck towns where everything was arranged on 1 street and had a handful of buildings. ...just depends on whether you want to model Walnut Grove, or Tombstone...
