General Anim8or Forum / Light direction
« on: May 14, 2008, 10:17:26 pm »
OK, so I'm using Anim8or to do some 3D-looking graphics for a game I'm making, and I ran into a problem.  I designed this plane that really came out nice... but just tonight I realized that the light is actually coming from UNDER the plane.

Does anybody know if/how you can change the direction of the light source?  Up till now, the only way I can think of is combining all the solid objects (Build > Join Solids) and rotating the entire object... not always a good move.

Anyway, i'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas you have.  Since I haven't really learned scenes yet, maybe it can be done in Scene Mode?  :)

Thanks again.

General Anim8or Forum / Controlling view angles
« on: February 12, 2008, 08:39:12 pm »
Hi.  I was wondering, does anyone know how to set the view / rotation angle.  That is, let's say I'm animating a character for an isometric game, and need to use a 45-degree angle.  Even something simpler, let's say I'd like views "left" and "right" to showa more 3D angle (instead of a view like you're looking straight-on).  Don't know if its possible but i'd like to try.

Thanks. :)

PS - I think maybe it can be done in "scene mode" but i haven't really experimented with that feature yet.

Problem solved!  Thanks to everyone for your help!  :)

I spoke with one guy online (AIM) and he thought it might be a hardware thing - It probably is, but using "Darken" and then setting the material color to white did the same thing.  (Just for future reference).

Actually it gets stranger.

For whatever reason, the program doesn't seem to know which color to blend with the material color.  Looking at it more closely, I found that it took all the lighter shades (whites, off-whites, etc) and blended them with the material color (a brown).  This image is a face, (eyes and a mouth) so I needed the image background to match the skin color and the whites to be there.  Is there a way to tell the program which color to use as the background?

Also, as far as rendering goes, something else is happening... the texture does not show up at all.  Instead, it replaces it with a metalic silver color.  This is getting more and more bizarre each time I try to fix things.  Do you have any ideas about what's going on?

Thanks again :)

General Anim8or Forum / Re: Material fo human skin. And free models.
« on: January 05, 2008, 12:15:52 am »
Well, as far as textures go, you can actually find them on Google.  Textures are used on all kinds of 3D drawing programs, in games and as web site backgrounds; so if you Google "Free textures" you'll get tons of hits.

What makes a good human skin material/texture?  I think that's all a matter of perspective.  What looks good to one may not be so good to another.  As far as I know, there is no set standard for "good" textures.

For me personally, I have found a good color (The hue is 30 and the saturation is 152, with the value depending on skin color), but it's very basic and I think a texture might be better.

Hope this helps :)

PS - I really like you idea about a web site where you can send models.  I don't know of one, but I think I might put one together... it's probably not going to be anything fancy, but maybe someone will be able to take it over in the future.

Hi again.  If you have read my messages before you know just how new to this I really am... sorry for all the what should be dumb questions.  Some of these things just aren't covered in the manual - or at least nowhere I have found yet.

OK, when I apply a texture to a face or series of faces, something strange happens.  I have set the alpha mode to "Layer" so it will blend with the color of the material.  But instead of doing this, the texture shows up but with a totally BLACK background!  Does anyone know what the heck is going on?  I have tried lots of different strategies for this (using no black in the texture, playing endlessly with the material, etc) but still have no clue.

Thanks as always for your ideas. :)

General Anim8or Forum / Texture "transparency"
« on: January 01, 2008, 06:24:41 am »
Hi again.  This may seem like a dumb question, but does anyone know how to make a texture partially transparent?  For example, I have a file showing eyes and a mouth for a character, and I'd like to make it so that only the eye and mouth show (but not the solid background).  Is there a way to do this?  I'm sure there is (alpha something, or maybe the "trans" value in the texture dialog box?) but I don't know what it is.

Thanks :)

General Anim8or Forum / Undo bug?
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:18:49 am »
Hi.  This is probably a question that has been addressed someplace before, but I have no idea what to do about it.

OK, so here's what happens:  I'm in Figure Mode, and 2 really strange things happen when I move objects.

First, the object moved (and sometimes others in the scene) seems to lose its materials and turn to a shade of gray.

Second, when I hit "Undo" I get this message:
----------------------------------------
The instruction at "0x0043dda3" referenced memory at "0x00000000".  THe memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.
----------------------------------------
Obviously, this is some programmer-level code and it's written in a language I don't understand.  Does anybody know what's going on, or what can be done about this?

Thanks so much :)

Hi.  Though I'm not sure about what exactly you're looking for (and didn't go to the sites you mentioned, sorry) I do know of a great free drawing tool that has layers. it's called "Paint.NET" and is available at http://www.download.com - maybe you can use Paint.NET plus rendered images... anyway it's just an idea.  Hope it was helpful :)

General Anim8or Forum / Questions about textures
« on: December 22, 2007, 06:39:05 pm »
Hello. :)

This may seem like a dumb question, but how do you control how much of a texture is shown on a face?  For example, let's say I want an image to tile (repeat) x-number of times on one face.  Is this possible?  Also, where do I put the texture in the material box (ambient, diffuse, etc.)?  These are only a few questions I have, so also if any of you know of a good texture tutorial someplace, I would very much like to know about it.

Thanks,
mfox7 :)
