Finished Works and Works in Progress / Re: Trans-Neptune - the Web Series

Thank you for a meter measure.

I'm wondering if 'SpaceTec' has already any logo? Do you need one or is there already a finished version? I believe it would add to the climate if these small objects/doors/spaceships/suits had that logo painted on, and it would appear on the screens, maps and other documents.

I think it's good idea to have it before making textures. Any suggestions and references? I may help with design.
References (my ideas so far):

Possibly with some swooshes.

What do you think?

[edit]
BTW. 'Sphere' movie is quite an interesting reference imho. There are suits, two stations (one from near future, and another underwater) from inside and outside.

Today it was the third time in last 7 days that I've encountered error while trying to access anim8or's forum site: http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php

'Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.'

Anyone else had this problem as well?

I think I've made decision on how will it look like. I choose the red one with patterns http://www.jellyfishfacts.net/jellyfish_pictures/jellyfish_58.jpg as my main reference. This shade of red is even more cool http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=3HzFiQFFQYw#t=190s . Dark, more opaque tentacles will blend into the bell. It will have 6-sided symmetry instead of typical multiply of 4. It's going to be stylized mix of designs rather than realistic one. I plan to add at each segment glowing elements that in further plans will act as a spectrum analyser for a background music, though I still think about best way to execute this (movement linked to the bell, morphing, opacity or sth. else).

Here's sketch and another test of material - model is again just random shape. This shader makes really cool thin layered translucency effect when rendered on black background. I think it will stay very likely the same in the final version of the pass. To be composited in the additive blending mode. Any suggestions on these?

whoah! You can do this stuff in VirtualDub? I should do more research on it. All I've done with it is convert codecs and make animated GIFs

Check this example:
(particle footage recorded from particleView tracked with DebugMode Wax)

AFAIK, there's no 'import video' plugin for VirtualDub. You can only overlay static image with 'logo' plugin. VirtualDub is for cropping, merging with soundtrack, changing framerate, colour tweaking, adding bloom etc. but when you need to put together some layers other tools are needed. I might not have been clear enough... This video was made in Wax with VirtualDub effect PLUGINS and FreeFrame PLUGINS in processing chain. It combines using additive blending mode static image (as a background) with animated particles on black background (that one attached below) having some effects on the layer.

I've tried Wax, hit it up a couple hours before reading this post, just for nostalgia... It's definetly not the best, and you'll probably have to mess around for a while to figure it out, but as long as it' does what you need, you'll be good.

Its true power lies in ability to use VirtualDub and FreeFrame plugins, with them it becomes fully featured (and free) compositing app. I have sometimes stability issues, but when you use it carefully and save often it's not that bad as it seems when you first look at it after installing it.

Also I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that but Blender has quite capable particle system and node-based compositing system. When you deal with the UI it can be also a good idea to use it.

davdud101 is right: compositing effects in postpro is good solution. Check this example:
(particle footage recorded from particleView tracked with DebugMode Wax).
If you need real 3d particle system you can use Terranim8tor (feature list and tutorial http://biederman.net/leslie/terranim8or/terranim8or.htm ) or program/script particle system you need by yourself, like in this tutorial: http://www.biederman.net/leslie/tutorials/Particle%20Animation/particle_animation_1.htm

Terranim8or supports animated textures, but for fire I'd simply model several objects and would turn on/off their visibility in semi-cyclic manner or use morphing for flames.

Hair looks really good! Can you show the mesh of them?
Hind legs even after tweaking still look painful. They're too... bendy? I'm not sure if it's a problem with joints in the wrong places or too few divisions in the mesh.

Haha! This looks really funny!
Judging from videos (as I can't play) you're master of making simple and colourful games. Are these selling well?

First of all - congratulations on the huge progress. I'll be looking forward finished trailer!

About posters: first one has classic type of composition (all characters lined up), but I somehow like 2nd more. Second one shows more interesting environment and dynamic pose, but a centre of it is a bit empty IMHO. I'd place there another figure or vehicle or prop or I'd shift the second character from left - still I prefer it over 1st and 3rd. Third one has a bit chaotic composition (I don't know where to put my eyes on) and I don't know if it's good to place a dead character on the first plan of your movie's poster.

Just as ENSONIQ5 said - showing mesh would be helpful to catch eventual sources of problems. So far I don't like how lower lip looks, there's a crease that I'm not sure if it was intended.

From design point of view there not much to judge so far. Single thin tooth looks funny to me rather than scary. Which look are you planning to achieve? Are you working from reference?

That render is great! The glow looks really cool.

The ones with bioluminescence are most interesting to look at in my opinion. I had fun watching that video 'theres no such thing like a jellyfish'

I'm planning to make bioluminescent one ;) I'm the same opinion as you that the glowing jellies look the most interesting, and it would be even more if I managed to animate it to the music... As for video - this is the best reference for their movement and for variety. I think I'll choose 2-3 photos from the other link to incorporate the best elements from each of these into my sketch.

I like the start youve made there. These complex materials are hard to get in Anim8or (and almost impossible in a single pass) so I have to wish you good luck!

Unfortunately this material will be scrapped to avoid use of refraction. It can be useful only in the case when I use UnitDistance to render jelly's thickness (for transparency map) and it won't take too long. Probably I'll need passes like: 'rim' (light at the camera inverted to have soft glowing edges), 'translucency' (some more tests required - any suggestions how to fake it? other than 'invert diffuse'), emissive (glowing elements on separate layer), depth, combined pass, but still it depends on jelly's material...

A lot of luck indeed will be helpful :D

I'm doing environment and material test for jellyfish. So far I have 50:50 mix of transparent, self illumination with dielectric of IOR ~1.2, but I think I'll need something completely different because refraction with bumpmapping pass takes quite long to render. It looks really pretty and would be suitable for still image, but for animation rendering time is not acceptable. Model is just a deformed sphere.

I'm doing research on how such jellyfish may look like, but there are so many shapes and colours that's very hard to make decision.
First of all I need design, next model and then I can start making material.

Very nice! Simple, but I don't think it's been done in Anim8or. Gives me an idea for the theme of the next Anim8or challenge...

Hehe, I'm already curious ;)

Nice work dwsel, but I warn you, scripting is addictive!  The link below is to a steam engine I built a while back in Anim8or where all the motion (other than the camera) is scripted.  Each script derives its 'speed' factor from the size of a sphere that is not visible, so by just changing the size of the sphere you can change the speed of the engine.  In this video the sphere is keyframed to slowly expand, hence the engine accelerates.

How long did it take for you to make this fully animated engine? It looks really complex. And well.. this is perfect example of what should be scripts used for.

I was thinking about using animation scripts for something more organic, like for example a structure moving and morphing in the rhythm triggered by background music, or behave like an oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer (for given previously analyzed and prepared tabbed data).
