Very cool Steve :)

uh.... what if you wanted to keep the left half? :P

62
You got the right idea Steven ( though the lamp itself is the glass in question :P )
photon mapping sounds pretty exciting :D
But yeah the hack would be ok also. Sounds weird that it would slow the shadows down rather than speed it up. Maybe just the way it is built that you would be basicly reversing the calculations of those objects?

who needs drugs? :P
looks good!

for neon use a material with a high emissive value...
Lower the current lighting a tad.
Add lighting inside the object..... If it is tubes maybe use spot lights at an angle. They are pretty harsh though... local lights tend to be better.

just another wierd project ( kinda small though  ::) )
the image below I grabbed from the vid ( lost the project LOL )

Lighting can use some improvement. and don't care for that cieling tile. Looks artifical to me somehow... maybe too much specular or too much bump..... maybe both. Most cielings and walls don't have any real specular or shine.

At least one light should serve as "ray bounce" off the floor and/or walls. a value betweem white and gray is common . but using the color of the object will work also.

Oh, and for the ray bounce. don't include shadows.

Sorry if I didn't state it clearly enough. All 3 photos used the ART renderer. And the missing feature in
ART is what I was refering too. Without this option it's pretty useless to use an object as a light source properly with shadows enabled.

in image 2 the light is inside the object with shadows enabled, ( which is to be expected in a lamp )
In image 3 I showed how it should be by taking out the object blocking all the light. ( or causing everything to be shadowed improperly )

As for casting shadows at 100% dark, I never noticed this to be the case.... thanks for the insight  :P

Thanks. :P
Was going to make a video of it.... but that darn goblet made it take entirely too long. Maybe tomorrow I'll try again without the goblet ( was cool to see in a movie though )

68
The first image uses no shadows.

Its a great photo on it's own, BUT...

The second image used shadows.... note that the light source sits in the lamp. A big oops.

I took off the 'light' here to show what should be ( shadows with more emphisis than intended to bring focus to them )

If you ever decide to introduce self illuminating objects, you'll probably want to deal with this issue.

Oh,  I know how tough it would be to introduce shadows in the raytracer as it was in scanline. So don't blame ya if you never get it done  :-*

Small update ( and smaller image )

Think I found something pretty cool.... not going to say how it's done until I master it ;)

copy and paste changes the original object ;) (thus why it doesnt work in "morpheny" ) Though this is assumption, since I know nothing of the program

i have managed to have a few goes, dont think i would have got very far without the vid.
the column of buttons on the left side of animator start blinking frenetically whilst using the script, cpu usage around 70%.
running on a vista laptop.a bit worrying but it didn't blow up!
it's a very exiting tool...fabulous work.

I think you mean exciting...... unless of course you was quik to make an exit from of it :P

The floor is probably too shiny to be truly accurate (especially for a shed, rather than a ballroom!) but the point of this project was to show off ART's reflective attributes.

add that texture to the bumpmap.... that should add some accuracy ;)

I kind of see what you are refering to now
The idea is to get a good trasition from morph to morph, independant of any paticular morph created. This in fact requires the original object and cannot be readily changed. The "referance" MUST be "none". or morphs wont work the way they should.
However. There may be a way that can be implemented to "copy" a morph already created to speed up your modeling in the next morph, yet still retaining the original object as the referance.

To those that do scripting ( something I havent had the time to do myself yet ) this might be a good project ;)

However. I would not pass up the oppritunity to better understand morphs clearly by example. The only advantage to starting from an already created morph might be modeling speed, and will not always be the case.

The lock/unlock idea sounds great. I would also include with this colored wireframes to indicate the state and as seporation of the objects.

As for the second suggestion. you should not need more than one of a specific morph.
To close the mouth, just reverse your effects/

Open mouth - close mouth.
Open mouth - open wider - cloaw mouth

First note that close mouth IS your original object. thus an actual "close mouth" is not really needed.

if you have "open wider" set as it's own morph from original object, then you can easily reverse Open mouth at the same time "Open wider".

If you have not done so, check out my tutorial on morphs. As simple as it is, it will give you a very good understanding on how morphs work and can be applied
