Finished Works and Works in Progress / Re: Headphones
« on: January 27, 2008, 10:00:57 pm »
Thanks :)

I started with each earpiece.  To do that, I used the "sphereinder" plugin which basically makes a pill shape.  I then cut deleted all the vertices except one ring going flat around it.  I filled that figure, and used the shell tool then basically only used extrude and resize a lot.  After that I put in the little hole manually by detaching the face of the headphone, copying that object, then undoing the detachment.  I then pasted the object, resized it and rotated it, then joined the solids and manually used the add-edge tool to attach the two objects (the bridge command didn't work properly.)  To do the headband I basically used the same method except with a sphere, and deleted some points, then shelled.  Then I did some extrusions.

Hope that's what you were looking for ;)

Yeah thanks!

You make it sound so easy, which it probably is (a bit), it's just that you can think of how to do it, which I can't. I tried to make some headphones similar to yours earlier and they came out as total crap. Thanks for explaining how you modeled it, it has spawned a few ideas from me... :D

I think it's a good idea. He also has it (I believe) so that you must have at least 5 posts on the forum in order to download the free Carrara program.

I would have just downloaded it and left, but since I needed to post several times, I decided to stay for awhile. Now I have the forum bookmarked.

I mean, it's true, if he's going to all the trouble to make these tutorials and a great forum, he wants someone to look at the rest of it!

It looks great!

$imon's was awesome also. :D

By the way, how exactly did you model the headphones? What technique did you use?

Check out the manual. I haven't checked in awhile, but last time I looked it had a list of what each attribute does in the materials editor- Specularity, Ambiance, Diffuse, ect.

Not to shabby. The hand looks a bit fat, but it's pretty hard to see because it's so small.

How exactly did you model the head? If you want to try to make a more realistic head, I would recommend using the edge-loop technique. Two great video tutorials can be found here:

Looks nice! I like the look of the clothing, although I might change the colors a bit...

I would suggest making the hips a bit smaller... otherwise it looks more female then male.

Otherwise nice work! Also, can I see a wireframe? I would like to see how other people model other then myself. Thanks. :)

Hi guys!

I'm Back...

(Like the new Forum!) ;)

I'm modeling a Penguin and need some help,

First,

Thus should be the round body if a regular emporor penuign.

I used

x3
y4
z1

setting,
(from the hand modleing tutorial)

So i can make the legs.

(I wan the hole thing to be a single mesh.)

(except for the eyes.)

and I'll need a bit of help with the head when i get up to that stage.

Thanks.

Hi there. :)

Your problem is that you are using the "Extrude faces" tool. You need to be using the "Extrude Faces Connected" tool.

That should solve your problem. :D

Thanks for the useful examples. They make everything much clearer.

I was wondering if that second (blue lined) way would work. Like you said, I was thinking it might clutter things up more. I'll definitely try both ways out and post the results! :D

I was actually just looking at the unsubdivided wireframe, to figure out what needed to be done... Hopefully the attached picture is what you want to look at. Also, I just want to say that I really appreciate you giving me out tips like this. They are really helpful.

(I took out the eyes so that you can see the model better)

Also, I [think] I know exactly what you mean by smoothing out the corners of the eyes. It makes sense to me now. :)

Thanks, normally when I ask for the wires it's to see someone's edge looping, unless it's a lowpoly model, then it's to see how they used polys.  You seem to have some very clean edge looping here.  It looks good.  It looks like you could connect the vertical loop through the chin though.  It ends on either side of the chin, and it would be cleaner if it went right through.  For the eyes, I'd try to get the inner and outer corners of the eyes to merge in with the face as your eyes do themselves.
There also seems to be a bit of a mesh issue around the nose.  You will want to try to get all the polies around there to be quads that flow in nice edge loops.
It looks good though, I hope to see improvements!

Thanks for the critique. I have a (crappy) image with some questions. -made in paint

By the way, the chin and nose areas were made by insetting the faces and then messing with the verts made by the inset. I have no idea if this was a good idea or not, it was the only way I knew how to model those areas in that way. (Sorry for not being more useful... my 3D vocabulary isn't great at the moment haha)
