It seems so, but that is perfectly okay. The beauty of anim8or is its simplicity.
Just to orient you here are some steps that I would follow while making a character for example a bird.
STEP 1: I will open anim8or in object mode.
I will model a body part for ex: a foot. Then, i will go to settings->object and name it "foot".
Then, still in object mode, i will go to object->new and a new screen will appear and thus i will make a new object i.e. a new body part and name it.
Likewise I will go on making all the body parts.
step 2: Change the mode to figure editor. Make the skeleton by adding different bones to the root bone already present on the screen. Name the figure using settings->figure (for example bird)
then select a bone in the skeleton and with that bone still selected go to build->add object (the list of all body parts should show up), select the body part for that bone, hit ok. The body part will appear on screen. Just move and rotate the part to fit it on the bone.
Likewise, I will add all body parts to my skeleton.
