How do you make an object glow
« on: September 02, 2008, 08:56:27 pm »

I'm trying to model the sun in anim8or but I have no idea how to make it glow realistically. I've tried placing a light in front of it to simulate the glow effect but it just doesn't look right....any ideas??

I also have a second question to ask.  :)

Im trying to animate a character picking up a ball. However, I have to animate the ball with every keyframe of the hand movement and it makes it look like the ball isn't staying properly in his hand. Is there anyway I can cause the ball to move relative to the hand so it seems like its staying firmly in his grasp or do I have to do this keyframe by keyframe?

Im not sure how u could make the sun glow. i think usually the effects r done after the renderings, then manupulating the pics in a program like photoshop. but for ur 2nd question. i think k your best bet is to copy your model and just make the ball in the hand in ur copied model. ull have to re-rig everthing. but it might b easier than sincing up the ball with the hand and all that.
hope that helped.

Or you can use the technique where you create multiples of the object, or of the glow area, then have them get slightly bigger, but also transparent so that they appear to glow, like a gradient.  Post production always works well though.

for the second question you can do what i do render the frames when the character first puts his hands around the ball. then in figure mode create a  small ball in the characters hand that is a child to the wrist but not parent to another ( just selecte the wrist bone and add bone and don't rig it to anything) select this new bone then go to build and add the ball to the new bone.) The ball should be in its own object. Now the ball will be in the character's hand perfectly if not just move it were you want. go back to scene mode and render the frame when the caracter starts to move the ball in its hand. and put both videos in a video editing software.

Add an emissive component to the sun's material to make it glow (as in, be visible even with no external lights). Not sure if this would count as realistic, but perhaps with a good texture it might be enough (depending on what you want to use it for).

easyest way i know to make a someone pick somthing up is to, make your ball have a morph that shrinks it out of veiw,  call it somthing like hideball or somtn, add it to your figures hand like siragin said but in scene mode add the ball with the morph set to 0 and the ball in your figures hand set to 1. then when they line up reverse your morphs in the same frame.

I have absolutely no idea why I didn't recommend this before, but possibly the best way to make a sun glow would be to use a transparency map of something like a sun glow on a flat plane.  I would recommend this technique over most all others since it's very low poly and gives a great glow without needing post-pro (post production) work (though post-pro can often be very useful.)

It might be helpful to clarify what you mean by "glow".  Do you mean self-illuminate or have a glowy halo or corona around  it? the self-illumination would be easy, just create a material using the "Emissive" attribute.   If you want a corona, that is a little more complicated, because the corona you see when you look at the sun is a result of atmospheric diffusion among other things.
