ok, I made the hand in mesh, but when I go to subdidive faces, it says "you must select a single mesh to subdivide."
and hen I select thewhole thing it says " you have selected a group. you must select a single mesh to subdivide."
how do I fix that and subdivide faces?

un-group the object(s).  Either go Build>Ungroup or press 'u' a few times.  It seems you either have a group of objects, or you accidentally grouped your one object with itself (which is possible, you may have accidentally pressed 'g' with the object selected.)

Oh, and don't "subdivide faces..." use "Build>convert to subdivided" instead.

ok, there is another computer in my household, and it is running windows vist home premium. I cannot find the "run winxp compatable" button. I'll bring this up in the chat box real quick.

right click on the anim8or.exe go properties>compatablilty and then 'run this program in compatablity mode' --> select windows xp.

are you having trouble with the extrusion? lots of people have trouble with that.
