A few serious suggestions.
« on: September 18, 2008, 04:41:51 pm »

first of all I'd just like to say that i think anim8or is pretty good for a free 3d tool, i've used many different applications and have become fairly good with them, yet i still resort back to anim8or when it comes to modeling.

And that is what i think you should focus on steve, the modeling aspect. e.g

soft select

ability to bevel points not just faces and edges

real time modifiers - e.g mirroring so one side is always being updated

the modifiers we have already (bend, twist etc) make easier to use and the ability to use 2 at the same time.

now even more important than that is anim8or as an entity and what non anim8ors think of it. anim8or is amazing and what i use primarily for my 3d design, but a lot of people are turned off by its splash-screen, which isn't ugly, just doesn't show the capabilities of anim8or properly. also the colour scheme and the buttons aren't particularly attractive, nor is the website and the images shown on the site.

anim8or needs to move forward with the times to continue to attract people new to the world of 3d graphics, and not turn away and use a highly complicated program like blender (blender is actually very good, and i find myself using it far more often than i used to, but i still prefer modeling in anim8or) which can be confusing for first timers, which can ultimately stray them away from 3d design completely.

i realize a lot of the modeling things i have said have been suggested many times before, but a man can hope can he not?

concentrate mostly what i said about the interface and appearance of anim8or.

Well, this would probably be a little better suited in the .97 preview forum.. Aside from that, applying multiple modifiers is already possible. After applying the modifier click effect modifier before you apply another one.

Otherwise these are good suggestions

this is what anim8or is up against ....  http://uk.

I expect you have all seen it, unfortunately someone gets hold of bad graphics shots rendered with anim8or then uses them to downgrade it, (you could do the same with blender as well .....)

Once you start on a wishlist trail it can be endless, but for now I think there is more than enough for most users to be getting on with, and with the asl scripting even more to keep you occupied.

I however, would prefer to see more time spent on the animation/scene part which is lacking some important additions,  ie: ability to copy mutiple objects rather than to keep importing them from build menu, attach to path that actually works

I support Anim8or and will always do so.

concentrate mostly on what i said later on, that is the important stuff.

i was trying to say basically that steve should focus mostly on the modeling aspect, as i think that is what lures me, and many other people, to use it.

I also like anim8or and will support it, sine I am not planing on going pro I am not real worried on getting the latest program but I do agree with kreator though about the animation part it does need a little work but who am I to complain about a free program ;)

I have also heard that Steve is planing on rewriting anim8or which would be good cause then he would be able to implement a lot more features into anim8or......And i mean a lot more
But I do not if that is true

oh really, and where did you hear this? back up your ideas with facts and proof (as my English teacher would say).

Neither is of importance as long as the program does what it is supposed to do.
The functionality - which Steve is constantly improving - is what matters and the program's user base is constantly expanding. I have daily visitors from all over the world to the tutorials on my web site.

has everyone seen the youtube video blender vs anim8or.

basically it's a guy who uses blender saying how bad anim8or is and how great blender is. he gathers this information from what he sees on the anim8or website and what is on the blender website, what is in the galleries, the user interface etc. etc.

this is how all the non-anim8ors see anim8or. maybe just simple things like a change of the colour scheme, and adding sliders as well as manual input for things might help. just the little things that need improving.

Please remember that Anim8or is being constructed by one man in his spare time.  It is very much a work in progress, and as such obviously lacks a bit of polish.  Certainly I would like to see a number of improvements to the Anim8or package, in the interface, the animation engine, and (especially) the renderers.  But I feel content in the knowledge that these improvements will happen in time, and like Kreator says, there is more than enough to be going on with.

Anybody who has checked out the Anim8or gallery will have realised that the Blender vs Anim8or video is complete rubbish.  There are some incredible images in there, and I have seen some Blender work which is just atrocious.  These "my favorite software is better than your favorite software" videos are completely inane, a point that is quite obvious to anybody who has used both.

I have used a number of other animation packages, but I stick with Anim8or now, and have done for the last year, because it ticks a number of very important boxes for me, namely:

1. Relatively speaking, it is easy to use, and does what you expect it to.  One does not have to spend hours wrestling with the tools trying to get the result you want, before settling for something lesser.
2. It is capable of amazing things, but it requires some actual work and personal creativity to bring out its best.  It requires you to think a bit, rather than just click buttons.
3. It has a very small impact on my machines resources, leaving plenty of RAM for actual rendering.  Compare this to some other professional (and free web downloadable) packages and you will see what I mean.
4. Anim8or users are generally a friendly, helpful bunch, and it feels good to be part of the Anim8or beta testing team.

Frankly, I couldn't give a hoot how non-anim8ors see the package.  In my experience, people who move from Anim8or to professional packages like Maya or 3DS Max often lament the complex boning, mind-numbingly complex weight painting, or downright inadequate modelling tools, and in many cases they continue to use Anim8or for its strengths, exporting to other packages for theirs.  Steve has built a streamlined but capable 3D animation engine, and like lynn22 says, it is the functionality that really counts.  Rest assured that the window dressing will come, and I would agree that there needs to be a fair bit of it before the release of version 1.0.  But I think that addressing that now, when there is still so much functionality to improve, and yet to come, is a bit like putting the cart before the horse.

I agree with you here Ensoniq5. I have tried many other 3d software, but always sticked to anim8or. The simple use and the great people on the forums. The only 3d software i might ever switch to is cinema4d, because it's pretty similar to anim8or in it's simplicity. With steve working on new functions all the time anim8or only gets better and better.

p.s. for the ones who have watched the anim8or vs. blender vid, also check this reply on that movie out:

I watched the video - I think they should use some of the new stuff to compare with. Not to mention, noobees like me in here is no way to compare with people that have been doing this for a long time. I've played with blender, truespace and wings, but Anim8or it very powerful in it's simplicity. The steps you have to go through just to give an object reflection is insane in blender, but no to bad in truespace. Truespace is simple compared to blenders nightmare and it does have caustics. If Anim8or had fluid, cloth and caustics with very few changes to modeling, there would be countless users in this forum.

As also mentioned, Steve is doing this on a solo mission and many thanks go out to him on my behalf. The other people have many programmers to work on what they have achieved.

Steve, thank you! I really enjoy using this program, God Bless!

so if you calculate the 'Awesomeness per Programmer' ratio for each project (ie. you divide the awesomeness of the app, by the number of people who wrote it), you'll see that Anim8or is waaaaay more 'Awesome per Programmer' than any other app in existence!

'Awesomeness per programmer' seems like a good measurement ;D
