Please remember that Anim8or is being constructed by one man in his spare time. It is very much a work in progress, and as such obviously lacks a bit of polish. Certainly I would like to see a number of improvements to the Anim8or package, in the interface, the animation engine, and (especially) the renderers. But I feel content in the knowledge that these improvements will happen in time, and like Kreator says, there is more than enough to be going on with.
Anybody who has checked out the Anim8or gallery will have realised that the Blender vs Anim8or video is complete rubbish. There are some incredible images in there, and I have seen some Blender work which is just atrocious. These "my favorite software is better than your favorite software" videos are completely inane, a point that is quite obvious to anybody who has used both.
I have used a number of other animation packages, but I stick with Anim8or now, and have done for the last year, because it ticks a number of very important boxes for me, namely:
1. Relatively speaking, it is easy to use, and does what you expect it to. One does not have to spend hours wrestling with the tools trying to get the result you want, before settling for something lesser.
2. It is capable of amazing things, but it requires some actual work and personal creativity to bring out its best. It requires you to think a bit, rather than just click buttons.
3. It has a very small impact on my machines resources, leaving plenty of RAM for actual rendering. Compare this to some other professional (and free web downloadable) packages and you will see what I mean.
4. Anim8or users are generally a friendly, helpful bunch, and it feels good to be part of the Anim8or beta testing team.
Frankly, I couldn't give a hoot how non-anim8ors see the package. In my experience, people who move from Anim8or to professional packages like Maya or 3DS Max often lament the complex boning, mind-numbingly complex weight painting, or downright inadequate modelling tools, and in many cases they continue to use Anim8or for its strengths, exporting to other packages for theirs. Steve has built a streamlined but capable 3D animation engine, and like lynn22 says, it is the functionality that really counts. Rest assured that the window dressing will come, and I would agree that there needs to be a fair bit of it before the release of version 1.0. But I think that addressing that now, when there is still so much functionality to improve, and yet to come, is a bit like putting the cart before the horse.
