Next full version?
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:21:44 pm »

Steve, any idea when you plan to release the next full version, instead of a preview or beta? I just noticed that the last full version on the download page is 95c, but the preview is up to 97d.
So far, I haven't had any major issues with the previews and it's like Christmas day when a new preview comes out, I'm just trying to get a handle on your release strategy (or lack thereof  ;D)

Hey man, this is a question that we all ponder, but that also brings me back to realize what was stated in Anim8or when you goto About>License.

And I quote... "4. WARRANTY:

USE ANIM8OR AT YOUR OWN RISK.  THERE IS NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED
WARRANTY AS TO ITS CAPABILITIES OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.
Anim8or is just a program that I write in my spare time and give away at no cost.
I can't promise anything but that I will try to fix any problems that my time allows.
BY USING THIS SOFTWARE YOU AGREE TO THESE TERMS."

I mean we all wish Steve could spend all of his time making leaps and bounds with Anim8or, but then again we don't pay his bills!  ;D

And as I have found, it is like Christmas when Anim8or comes in a new build, and its also kinda a surprise. Which I personally kinda like. It makes you wonder, "what's going to be in this version!"

You should seriously see me when I check on this website and find that Anim8or has a update... needless to say "Giggling like a school girl since 2000!"

Any way to Steve can't wait, take your time, and make it good!  :D

I don't know when the next full release will be.  I have a few things in the works for another preview and will probably put in the work for a release sometime after that.  Releases take a lot of time to do the documentation, add all the new ART material properites to dialogs, etc.

I don't think I will call the release 1.0 yet because there are still some important things that I want for it to be called "1.0".  Practically speaking I don't think it matters.  I'll just start of 1.0+ as soon as 1.0 is out

If I do that and then someone's favorite things doesn't make it in for some reason they'll be dissapointed.  Just wait and see and it will be a big surprise :-)

Steve has got a point and like I mentioned before, it's bringing back those "Giggling like a school girl" rushes that I get when Steve mentions big surprises!

Can't wait!

Steven tends to suprize the heck out of me with things that many would not have  thought of ( and/or things you'd think would never make it in anim8or. )

ART is my second attempt at adding a ray tracer to Anim8or.  The first one was basicly done 18 months before ART came out but, wow, it was buggy.  It was too ambitious for the time I have.  Too bad I spent so much time on it because that means other things were done :(  That wae frustrating.  But then maybe I learned something writing it so maybe ART is better that it would have been if I had tried a simpler one first :)

Steve Is there any chance you can post a list of the things you have in mind, to get an idea of the things anim8or will have in the near future?  ;D

It's quite unlikely that Steve list what he is working on, as he wrote here some days ago,  it could be disappointing to anticipate a new feature that maybe will not make it in the next version.
But imagine this: the next version will be not less cool than the current preview, and that's not a small thing, what do you think? ;)

Kind of makes one wonder what WOULD have been in previous versions of anim8or.

I would actually wonder more what is the requirement for something to not be a preview version. I mean I can understand if you dont want to drop hints about new features but the fact that there hasnt been a full version release for like 6 or so versions kinda makes one wonder which version is best to use. I'm STILL using .95 because .96 and .97 are supposedly lacking something that makes them more stable.

Both v0.95 and v0.97d are pretty stable, i only use 0.97d now. But still 0.97d is to unstable to call it a full release. It has some new functions that are really helpfull (ART!) but it crashes often.
It's fun to already get used to ART and the other functions, but if you are affraid to lose some of your work v0.95 is a better option.
Save your work often!
