Tutorials on forums?
« on: June 03, 2009, 03:34:47 am »

I think there is quite a few of anim8ors who know what they r doing. My idea is to have a compilation of the best of the best (you know who you are). Cover all of the basics to 3d animation. Lighting, shadows, topology, textures, etc. I havent really covered much of all the aspects of 3d, but im trying to. The worste part of it is *Trial and error*. I can spend hours trying to figure out how to light my scenes or th,e best way. How to manipulate tectures. How to model an object to rig it and all kinds of other things. I figure, having a "grab bag" of everything 3d related would help alot.

I'm to the point where I'm using anim8or in my sleep. But, I don't know the "right" ways to do everything.

It's just a thought but i think it would really help alot of people. I know there are more than a handfull of people who have helped me out a great deal. I just want it all to be in the same place for every1 else.

Well, first off, you could use Google and search for the information your looking for, because tutorials can nearly always be translated to different programs, for example a tutorial for Max, can be applied for Anim8or for the most part and usually the writer also includes extra information such as why your doing something, real-world examples, other practices to follow etc
Although if you are asking for Anim8or related tutorials so you can be better at Anim8or than my mistake.
While I'm here; I personally believe trial and error is a great way of learning as you might not get what you want, but you might instead figure out something else in the process, and there's no right way to do something in Art, although there are a few standards you might want to follow.

Good point tanzim, I learned anim8or the trail and error way, and that is something to be proud of. At the same time, I also would agree with rellik420 in that a plethora or very well put together tutorials would be a huge help for those who don't have the most time to trial and error there way through out the whole experience. You can go to sites like 3dtotal.com(one of my favorites) and find very well put together tutorials for some of the bigger names in 3d. And all in religively the same general format. Now Anim8or does have it's own tutorials page but what if we had a link to a collection of all sorts of different well put together tutorials all specific to Anim8or! It would be awesome. I don't know if it's just me but I personally don't like visiting random other sites that represent anim8or and the site doesn't give me the anim8or feel or simplicity. So a good idea rellik420.

Just my two cents.

It's a little bit of both, as far as anim8or specific vs general 3d specific. I just thought having a packaged deal would be more convenient. I'm always getting help going through the wip section. I just think if everyone put their knowledge packed into one place it would be really usefull. Even something simple like finding that 3dtotal.com site. It might take me 20 minutes to even find that. but it took me 2 minutes just going to the forums.

It's just an idea and I dont think it would be too hard to do.

After witnessing a toddler's life of this forum's existance, I have seen that there have been HUNDREDS of different questions posted by HUNDREDS of different people HUNDREDS of different times! If there's one thing we know, it's that almost no noob can use the search function. This would help.

Trial and error works to a point, but should not be used in every situation and to learn everything.  There is a point where its good to know the best ways to go about things, or how different things work.  The issue is, though there are some very skilled artists, they have only so much time, and can only devote so much time to helping others and the forums.  Compiling all the information and tutorials would be a huge job.  If it could be done easily it would already be done.  The issue is that everyone has their own life, and also wishes to create art on the side.

My advice is to go out and figure things out on your own.  Yes, it may take a little time to figure out how to do something, but as others said, there are tons of resources already out there, you just have to search and find them.  For example, as stated before, most tutorials from other programs can be translated to Anim8or.  The main thing you want to learn when following a tutorial is the methods, reasoning and techniques used.  When following a tutorial to create a sword you shouldn't be following the tutorial to create a sword many other people have created.  The point is to learn the techniques.  Think about why things that are being done are being done, attempt to follow the logic.  Take your own time to read up on different subjects and how different people do different things.  Experiment yourself with the tools once you figure out how they're used, but think outside the box as well, that's now new and better techniques are created.

And yes, as xalener said, the search function should be useful to you as well.

My final note, and one of the most important things I find, is that one of the greatest ways to learn is to observe other artists methods and understand why they do what they do then you can figure out how you will work and why.

I think that Getting together a package of tutorials would be great! I know it would help me. Sometimes I look at models and say "How in the World?" And then try to recreate it and fail miserably. Another good Idea would be to get a bunch of great tutorials for other programs and then "Transalate" them so that New people can understand how to do the tutorials in anim8or...
