Turbosquid
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:23:02 am »

Hey, everyone. :) I know this may sound funny, but I want to know a few things about turbosquid.com.

First off, has anyone here sold anything on there before? I'm wanting to make a little money so I can get what (I) want. :P Mostly, because all I ever get is an occasional surprise from my parents, and some money every now and then. But mostly all I'm entitled to is breakfast, lunch, dinner. :P Just kidding, obviously, but that's almost how it is. ;)

Anyway, to the point, I think I have good enough models to sell. And I was wondering, how much do they charge you to sell? I've heard that they deduct 50% on every sale. Is this true?
And also, are anim8or's exporting capabilities good enough to fit someone with 3ds Max, Maya, Lightwave, or whatever? I guess I mean the way it's UVmapped, or just a planar texture? I've exported to 3ds and obj and opened them in Blender and Gmax and they look fine, but what about commercial programs? Just wondering, thanks for any responses!

I'd really appreciate it, guys if you could shed some light on this little matter. :)

Usually people want the file to be in the native format of the program they're using. So it's best to provide as many formats as possible in the same package so that it'll appeal to more people. If you can import them into Gmax or Blender then usually it'll import the same way in any other program.

It's always best to prepare a complete asset. That is, provide not only the model but also any textures, shaders, animations, scripts, and/or sample scenes that can or should come with it. The more useful it is the better chance it'll sell. Just a plain mesh with no uvmap or texture is not desirable at all.

I'll go ahead and be frank: from what I've seen from you so far, you probably won't sell much if anything. Turbosquid's already packed with 3D assets so unless you can churn out extremely professional work then your stuff will be just another drop in the bucket next to all the thousands of lesser grade work. Don't think you can get a quick buck off of it, the only real chance you have of selling anything is if you put hours of time and effort behind each work you put on there.

If you think it might have been done before, it probably has so search to see if it's on Turbosquid before you bother making it to sell it on there.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but just don't go in there expecting to sell. Just do it for the experience and any money you get out of it will be a pleasant bonus ;)

Just listen to what Raxx is saying, he is absolutely right.
I had a quick look at the Seller section and it seems that 50% is their share of the sale.

I would suggest to search for other sites where modelers can sell to maybe a less demanding customer base and while this may result in lower sales prices the quantity of sales could be higher.

As Raxx says, don't count on making a wealth of money there, however I think it could be a fun thing to see what can be had.

We do have an anim8or member who has sold a few things on turbosquid. He models in anim8or, but also uses several other programs in his production. The main thing is knowing what to model... In one month's time I believe he did get over $100 in sales (after the 50% claimed by Turbosquid).

While I have not tried to sell anything myself, I think the key in it all, based upon what that individual did sell, is that the more unique, unusual, or bizarre your model, the less likely you are to sell it  The thing to try to focus on is mundane, ordinary items - things that are almost bound to be found in as many types of projects as possible. These items are likely to be bought because those are the things people won't waste time on when they'd rather be designing the more unique things themselves.

One interesting thing to try, model something and give it away there, just to see what happens... I modeled a fairly cruddy bottle cap, and within a few days it had been downloaded about 50 times!

In fact, since I posted it a month ago, it has been downloaded 479 times as of this moment!  Here it is, just for fun: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/464087

Yeah, thanks, guys. :) I haven't shown anything halfway good on here ever. But on other sites you may see some awesome work by me. (So says some forum members) I also pay attention to accuracy and poly count. But I don't really have much to show here at this moment. Most of my stuff is a Work In Progress. But I think that my stuff would sell. And a lot of other people do too. But thanks, guys for the comments! I'm in the process of "researching" selling on turbosquid. But thanks!
