Is it possible ?
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:50:01 am »

Do you think it is possible to modelize the little ant in attachement ?
With the big smile and the big eyes ?
If someone can do this challenge, it will be sincerely great, because i tried but it's too difficult for me.
Thank's

Ah! flin from bug's life. Yes this is possible to make and i'm sure you can do it too!
All you need is a little practice. Try some tutorials and read the manual a couple of times. This way you will get fimilar to the tools anim8or has to offer.
With these skills it's not that hard to create this (or any other) character.

So my advice is to try it first yourself before asking other to make it for you. People here are always willing to help and give you tips when you don't manage on your own. But asking to make something for you, is something not many people would do.

just as a random thought, it might be easier to try modelling this ant first, get the basic shape, then round it out?

The ant on the left is 'Z' from "Antz"

By now it is time that you start to model your own characters.
Headwax already made an ant for you : http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=2389.msg17632#msg17632

I suggest you save his file under a different name and rework the object to match your new request.

Thank's all for your answers and encouragements, but modelling needs to have the soul of an artist. I thing that good modelers are also good at drawing, painting and sculpting aren't they ? Me, i'm just a piece of "...." at drawing, so it's why my attempts were null !

I find symmetrical artwork much easier than actually producing a work of art. If you cut the ant in half, and work on just one side of it, then mirror it you might find it really easy to do.

Frederic, not all modelers are good at drawing.  Some of them are horrible as well.  It helps to have a reference image as you do that you can follow as a guide.  You just fill in the depth and everything and you can use the image as a guide.  Your attempts weren't bad because you're not the best at drawing, it's because you don't have much practice.  I've seen people that're amazing at drawing that suck at first at 3D modeling.  It all comes with practice and experience.

+1 that... I really suck at drawing (dropped it at school as soon as I could), but the modeling is getting better and better over the months. If you take time to make some simple models you will get better and better.

I was thinking of doing this model but, as lynn has pointed out ( thanx lynn) Headwax has already modelled one for you... I really think you should perservere and start modelling, instead of requesting other people to do the hard work for you!

I have posted Plenty of Videos to show you the way...

We have a mentor/Buddy thread at ANIMANON , perhaps you could sign up for that?

FredericP. Start by making a low poly model and a piece at a time.
Like with any large project with several components’ break them down into smaller manageable parts.
Start with a foot, when happy with that, do the leg etc etc. Remember that you only need to do half the model as you can just mirror.
Hope this helps
