Error in reading file
« on: October 02, 2009, 01:58:35 pm »

A major problem.  :'(

After I had Shift-z two splines and was moving both points upwards, Anim8or crashed unexpectedly.

Reopening the file gave "Error in reading file" and the same error in the back-up file which was auto-saved 20 minutes after the last save of the working file.

The file is an accurate model of a house from 1675 and still lived in today.

I would really appreciate any help in getting this file to open again for I dread to have to spend so much time again remodeling from scratch.

I zipped the file to save space on Steve's server so anyone wanting to have a look will have to unzip it.

Many thanks in advance for any help I can get.

Hello Lynn,

I fixed your file. There were 2 malformed faces in "mesh01" (the point indexes were negative). I removed the faces and the file loads without problems so you will only have to redo this part.

Good luck with your model!

Kubajzz you are a genius, thank you ever so much :)

Could you maybe explain what I should look for if it happens again. I did look at the file but there is so much in it that I had no clue where to start.

edit : Please don't trouble yourself, I'll run both files in some software I have which will show me the difference(s)

I think there is not any general rule "what to look for" when trying to fix a corrupted file.

My favorite method is to delete a part of the file (I started with a whole object), save the file and try loading it in Anim8or. If the file loads ok, then you know the error is somewhere in the part you have deleted. You can repeat this process several times to locate the problem and in the end you fix the file by deleting only a line or 2... that's all :)

Thank you, I'll remember that :)

I compared the corrupted file with your "new and improved" version and the deleted lines looked like this :  6 4 0 -1 ( (247 -3) (232 -3) (233 -3) (234 -3) (236 -3) (235 -3) )
and the numbers have a -3 where no other lines have that.

I filled the deleted faces and started again where it last crashed and lo and behold it crashed again and the file could not open. So I went looking for lines with irregular numbers, deleted two and I could open the file again.

Until this building is finished I'll work in my tested fashion again with 2 identical files/ different names and alternate saves.

I'll be glad when this building is finished, apart from the crashes, it has caused me a lot of problems.

For those of you who are interested, the building is part of a project to recreate a very old town as it would have looked in the 18th Century (the 1700s). Ultimately, it will be an animation where the camera is the eyes of a visitor/tourist walking through the town.
I would like to add a few people as well but I haven't figured out yet how to make period clothes in a simple, efficient way.

For a sneak preview, it's here : http://www.3d-anim8.com/banff/
Everything is modeled in Anim8or, including the terrain (point by point - spline by spline) over a map with elevation lines so that when pulling up the elevation sections, the terrain becomes the "real" thing, humps and bumps included ;)
Images are rendered in Vue because of the vegetation that will be added at the end to complete the "look".

Thank you Kubajzz, I will let you know when it's finished but it will take some time yet ;)

Pincho, I don't make games. I model to animate. This is for an animated walk through the town.
The current front door is at the original back of the house. in the 1700s the front looked like this image and is now in the garden.

That's a really fascinating project you have embarked on Lynn22.  How are you getting the information about how the buildings have changed?  In this particular model the original window layout is pretty clear, but the original location of the door is not.  Do full records of each house's renovations exist, or are you using architectural archaeology techniques on each house?  If so, are you performing the research yourself?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am fascinated by this project and I really wish you well with it.  It looks like you have made an excellent start on one hell of a big challenge!

Thank you ENSONIQ5

I knew from the start that it would be a loooooong project but combining my interest in history and 3D it is also fun to do.
I do most of the research myself, reading documents, collecting old photos from the beginning of photography till the early 1900s which give a good indication of how it might have looked earlier since people used existing buildings for a long time. In fact most of the buildings still exist today though compared with old photos there have been modifications to allow for modern mod-cons.
Lately I have been put in contact with someone who is writing a book about the town also covering the same period so now we compare notes and fill in the gaps.

Recently I had the privilege of visiting this particular building and years of visiting old buildings in intact to ruined condition has given me the clues as what to look for to recognize any changes.

I still have a lot to do but with winter approaching it will fill the time nicely.

As I said before I would like to add a few people (not animated) to the walk-through because without them it would be like visiting a ghost town.

Here's the first one, grandma at her house. She will be in several places with different color dresses and headgear, a kind of one fits all ;D

It only took 2 days to make so I'll make a couple more at different ages and ....... that'll do nicely, thank you ;)

Oh wow! Her body is perfect for the Witch I am making. I don't suppose you would like to upload it?

(No it's not Anim8or)

It's for a game I am making, and I can credit you in it. I would just change the texture colour. I have four witches.. one red, one yellow, one blue, and one green.

Pincho you made this fabulous, detailed head, surely it must be a doddle for you the extend the shoulders into a dress.
You are selling yourself short in asking ;)

The cast of "extras" non-animated characters to populate the town. I had a most enjoyable time modeling the little girl, I think she's sweet :)

That's it for now, back to building houses.
