Focal blur
« on: October 31, 2009, 04:55:32 am »

Hello,
I'd like to try to add DOF to some of my projects (using depht channel).
Is there a free software to do this? (I actually use Artweaver 1.0 for UV MAps and after effects but I think it cannot do that :'().

There's no way to do it in Anim8or, but you could probably do it in an art program by merging two pictures together. You'd have to experiment.

the option in photoshop is called 'lens blur' , maybe you can look for that in other programs.

Otherwise you can fake it a bit by going in artweaver - select by color - choose completely black or white (whereever you want blur) and use a gaussian blur on that selection. You might want to do it different times so that there is more blur towards the back.

kreator: that tutorial does show how to make a depth map in anim8or, but the method of applying the blur is a bit old. In photoshop the Lens Blur tool makes it a lot easier:

But I don't think there are any free programs to do this with.. maybe you can download a trial version or something of photoshop, I'm not familiar with that.

There is a easy way to create focal or depth of field blur. Render along with your beauty render a depth channel. Play a bit with the z-near and z-depth (1-1000 most of the time works) so that you get a clear black and white image of your scene. Now open photoshop and import your beauty and depth channel renders. Then place the depth channel as a mask for the beauty render. Then use lens blur on the mask.

Thank you for the Tricks, I think you help me to find a method to get something like focal Blur with Artweaver!!
I'll be happy if a 3d champion can take a look to the way I try and say me if it seems OK or not. (If yes, this can be a good new for those who cannot buy photoshop, like me...)
