Sorry for being so naive, how do you accomplish that? ???

By selecting the Modifier, then clicking on the Rotate Tool (arrow).




   Or, you can click Edit > Rotate > Rotate ? Axis 90 (or Rotate Custom...).

One thing to remember, though:  It's important that your object has enough segments to produce reasonable results.  For instance, in the above image, I've got several vertical segments in the box object inside a Bend modifier.  This provides the equivalent of "joints," that will bend/stretch with the modifier.
