Show another person?

Ok... I have a friend who is considering taking up Anim8or (and joining this forum!) How should I teach him what I learned? Or should I just let him check the manual, like I did?

Well, problem is he moved far out a few months ago, so do I just show him pics with explanations or let him discover the awsome and amazingness of Anim8or?

Okay, I wouldn't "let him find out" because I did that with someone and he gave up months ago. I even taught him what I knew and he gave up. But mostly I told him to "look at tutorials and read the manual". Which was "letting him find out".

So I would show him pictures, renders, and tutorials. With explanations of simple models with the renders.

Good luck!

**you should direct him to the important links you learned modeling or animation from.**

what i think is most important in modeling, is edge loops. the better the edgeloops are the easier it is to animate or texture.  it really depends on organic or mechanic modelelling. most mechanic is simple shapes. organic is a little bit different, but its stll the same principle.

when you model an objetc you have to concider the textures and animation. it gets a little more complex but i think the basics are the basics.

uv maps, easy rigging, displacement maps. are what you need to worry about while your modeling your abject.

Well, if you want to wow him, I'd first direct him to the gallery here.

As for learning Anim8or, what I personally did was print out a copy of the Anim8or manual and placed it in a binder.  I read it through, experimented with Anim8or, then I'd read it through again (gaining a lot more from it), experimented with Anim8or some more, etc.

Tutorials are of course a big help.  It's easy to say "The extrude function extrudes all selected faces", but there's no substitute for seeing exactly how and when to use any given function.

If he's going to take the plunge with organics, i.e. faces or bodies, it would be best to learn edge looping from the get-go, rather than having to go back and learn it later.

Well... I gave him little advice and he's off with it... hope he makes some good models. oh, and by the way, dyno inc (www.dynoinc.tk) is now a privately owned animation company based around anim8or.

Luckily enough, I showed him how to model an apple on skype, and they've (being him and his siblings) have started on the eggplant and got pretty far. One thing I didn't know is that they great learners. I'll recommend him to this site.

all and all it takes time and practice. thats pretty much it. research helps a ton. (and i mean a ton) but some people just have that artistic ability and some dont.

take me for instance. i work pretty damn hard to do what i do. but some people just have the natural talent (i could name a few but i think every1 knows who they are). it would take me 4 times as long to do something half as good as them.

i think the only thing you can do is to show him/them shortcuts as to proper ways to do things. there are reasons why certain things are modeled a certain way,  be it post production, animation, texturing, or anything else.

if you dont have a database of things you found online, then i think your not researching very well, or researching at all. i think you should gather up all the important info u can for yourself 1st. then share it with other people. it will help the people you share it with emensly because u did all the grunt work with hours of reading articles and whatnot on the internet.

but like i said before its all about practice practice practice.
