Question: Animating one object?
« on: April 07, 2010, 09:03:08 am »

Just wondering, Is it possible to animate one object by using bones? for example, if you had a large, complex and hard to break up object, is it possible to add bones to it and animate it? I've seen tutorials all over youtube to animate simple objects that are made entirely of spheres and cylinders, but what about if I wanted to make an animation for a video-game character?

you cant export animations though. so if u do animate it you cant use it in ur game. unless u use a script that exports each frame as a seperate .3ds object. from what ive read thats not all that uncommon to use animations in games without bones. but u need an engine that supports this method. and i dont think all of them do.

To add on to Rellik's comment, basically if you plan on implimenting this into a game you will have to use another program such as milkshape 3D that does support exporting animations into particular usable formats.

thank you everyone who replied! I am starting to understand anim8or much better than before, but does anim8or export bones? because if it exports the bones I can easily animate it inside this game program, called Unity3d. you can find it at unity3d.com. there is a free version, but the pro version is very expensive ,around $1500.

 ??? Why on Earth would anyone pay $1,500 for that when there is;

Panda 3D - Free 3D game engine
Products made with Panda include; Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Vampire Story.
Need to know or learn Python or C++ for coding.  Open Source from CMU.
Some one at my college downloaded and showed off the example games that come with it. Looks easy enough to learn.  Build your models in Anim8or and make a Script to run them in the game.

Blender Game Engine - Free 3D game compiler
Products made "Yo Frankie!", Dice War 3D, etc.
I have only made the basic tutorial games (mazes) and not interested in the game engine aspect.  Helps to know or learn some Python but not necessary.

Unreal Development Kit - Free to build and distribute Free games or $99 for commercial license and 25% of profits over $5,000.  In short, you get the full commercial version here and only have to pay them if you are selling your software. I haven't tried it but people on Max, Blender, and other forums are loving it.
Products made; Unreal, Prometheus, Gears of War 2, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series,    Star Wars: Republic Commando, etc..

I don't see anything popping out on the unity3d site that makes me want to buy... of course gaming and making games is not my thing but I thought you should check your resources before grabbing something so expensive.

Best Wishes,

well, when I earn enough I'm buying it. tell me, do any of those have these?
realtime reflections/refractions/ratracing
in-game mesh editing
PhysX physics engine
3 different programing languages
can make games for any gaming device (Iphone, Ipad, Xbox 360, PS3, Macs, PCs, Wii, DSi, DS, PSP, or basically any other gaming device you can think of)
is compatible with both macs and PCs
'just press play' testing/in game editing

I'm not saying those are bad, but this is for people who are going to make games for a living, not a hobby.

EDIT: also, you pay once, you get all their software, including any future update. you don't have to pay again and you keep the lisence.

 :o

That's fine it is still a free planet and they haven't made me Queen yet.  You can do what you like it's your money.  I am a poor broke college student that couldn't even go on Spring break this year.   :'(  I was just offering you some options.  I use Blender mostly but when my laptop crashed I took up the Anim8or on my parents PC (a real dinosaur).

Now I had some choices to make... new laptop or vacation in Florida?  I chose new laptop.  But honestly I can only answer those questions to some degree about Blender.

Quote
  • realtime reflections/refractions/ratracing - yes pixel shading too.
  • in-game mesh editing - yes of course
  • PhysX physics engine - yes  (not PhysX) but yes
  • 3 different programing languages - more than 3
  • can make games for any gaming device - I'm going to say yes*
  • is compatible with both macs and PCs - yes Linux too which is what I run on my laptop.
  • 'just press play' testing/in game editing - yes P key

*You might want to check the fine print on that "any device" clause, I am not saying they are dishonest. I just know one of the students here at college is trying to just make an Xbox 360 game and Microsoft terms of use states that he can only create it and give it away free of charge unless they own full rights to your software.  That's Microsoft for you.

Again I want to assure you that my motives are not to talk you out of buying this engine, just to inform you of other options.  And the only one you have to pay for that I listed is the Unreal Engine if you make money otherwise it too free.

yeah i was way too broad when i said every, i meant some of the major ones. Also, it really is physX, it says on the site, and it has a free version that you can publish buyable games with, at least, i think so... And i'm thinking about trying blender. At the current time, it's too complex for me, so i use anim8or. And even if I learn it i'll do some touching-up to them in anim8or.
