i think there's a torus plugin or something that makes a shape like this, try google, it's a great friend when ur looking for stuff like this

i don't know much about installing plugins, but i'm sure there will be documentation somewhere on the download or website

if you want to do it w/o plugin you can make a thin rectangle using splines lathe it and delete the faces on the top like this....

well, what to expand on......what i did for that is did whay i said, but then i noticed that there was no hole, so i deleted the center point on top and bottom in wireframe.sorry i don't really know how to make pics of wireframe, splines, etc. if i could i'd make a torus tutorial in the mean time i'll try to email the torus in the model database in the resources.

I recommend lathing, it's the easiest way (i think Torus plugin is not exactly what you need...)

see lathing in the manual

yeah....i dont use plugins.i tried it once, they aren't as awsome as it seems.first of all, it's like using someone else's model, and what skill does that build if the model is already made for you.

My thoughts on your dilemma ,
1: pull ou a cylinder make it 18 longitude, untick cap start and end then convert to mesh,
2: go point mode, delete all the points except last segment. now you should have a ring
3: select face mode....multiselect all faces, click shell tool and drag out to make some thickness
4: select edge mode ....multiselect top and bottom edges of cylinder seg....click bevel tool and drag  to bevel edges of ring
5: subdivide ... presto a ring... apply gold texture ......somebody`s wedding?
took a couple minutes ... this took longer to write and post

Another way:
1.  Go "Build>primitives>N-gon" and change the 'Value' to however many sides you want for your ring.
2.  In object edit mode use the "Add N-gon" tool (G), drag the tool to create a ring of the size you want.
3.  Go "Build>Extrude" and change the length and segments as you wish (If you want to keep it lowpoly you'll want the segments to be 1), also be sure to check the proper axis to extrude on.  If you create the N-gon in the front view, you'll extrude along the z-azis, if you did it from the top view you'll extrude on the y-axis.  Lastly make sure to uncheck "cap start" and "cap end".  Then, in point-edit mode use the shell tool on the object and drag too the desired width.

Hihosilver: Nice, wouldn't have thought of that.  I would create a cross section of the ring, using a stretched n-gon or manually drawn polygon, shift it off the axis of rotation, and lathe it.  Quick and simple.  You could also create an extrusion from the polygon and then use a bend modifier to curl it up perhaps, in much the same way a ring is made in real life.  I dunno, I would have to experiment with that.

Ensoniq5:  About the curling method:
It is possible, and it's been done before.  I haven't heard about it being done for rings, but that's one way of making a tire with treads.  Some people model one flat section of the treads, then copy and paste in a long line, joining the solids and merging the points.  Then they use the bend modifier (you have to be very exact) and create a bend of 360 degrees.  They then merge the points where they meet, and have perfect treads!

Alternatively:

:) :) :)

Make a cylinder of the appropriate dimensions.
Convert to mesh.
Select top and bottom faces (caps)
Indent faces.
Hit bridge command (= button)
Subdivide.
Voila.

Mind you a cylinder is predefined primitif so you should not really use it....

Or build primitives....Ngon    create your ngon...Ctrl C   Ctrl V..make the copy a bit smaller ( scale) Join Splines...Fill.
