Mesh Floor sloved. free trans map
« on: March 17, 2008, 08:41:13 am »

I have made a reactor room, it has a walkway with a mesh floor, I'd like the holes in the mesh to be see-through?
Any ideas how I go about doin this guys?

This is the mesh I want to use I have made it tileable.

Thanks

You have to make a transparency map for it.
If I remember them correctly, any part you want to see must be white, and any part you want invisible must be black.

So take your texture, and place it into your favorite photo editing program, and make the grate white, and the holes black.

keep your image program open, so if I told you wrong colors you can easily fix it.

I agree with ID_eNTITIY; I also recommend you adding a bumpmap so the holes will look more plastic.

There's just one problem: if you want the mesh to cast shadows, it wont work with transparency map - transparent materials cast the same shadows as non-transparent surfaces... So if you want it realistic, you will have to make it hole-by-hole...

So what you'll want to do is use the image in an image editing program and change all parts of the image that are chain too a solid white, and the rest of the image that should be transparent to a solid black.  Then you put it in the 'Trans' slot of the 'Textures' dialog box in the material editor.

Way hay done it. Thanks guys.

Only problem is that when I shrink the mesh to fit it loses quality an it goes all pixelated.
Not to worry I'll sort that. Thanks again
