Running Anim8or on 64 bit Windows 7 (sort of)
« on: June 21, 2010, 10:27:29 pm »

Hi, I've been using Anim8or since Windows 98, always ran on every new computer and every new operating system ... until I got my Compaq CQ60-615DX (Intel Celeron 64 bit.) Of course the XP emulator required upgrading to a more Pro version of Windows 7 at $100+, and as I see it it's a pig in a poke, no guarantee that will fix anything. I've tried everything, from latest driver to running in every compatibility mode there is, and no joy.

However, if I run in safe mode (F8 while starting) Anim8or will run. The aspect ration for the screen is off, but I can adjust that later in Poser for instance. Of course this requires rebooting every time I want to run Anim8or, which is a pain.

I am assuming that something in the non-essential services or maybe even the video driver is the culprit but I'm not sure how to go about narrowing it down. I have turned off services one-by-one and that doesn't arrive at a configuration that will run Anim8or ... I don't know if I'm asking for help or offering advice at this point. But this is my story for what it's worth.

Thanks for the time,

harnold

Hi Harnold,

Believe me friend I've tried it all too, not much of it helps. However, my Anim8or runs but it has a few problems, like random crashes or anim8or having other windows "bleeding" through into the viewport. I'm running vista by the way. I'm lucky I guess I don't have the problems you are having, but just like my problems it wont get any better until an update from Steve rolls around that supports vista and 7 more. I'm not quite sure why booting up in safe mode would work but normal wont, some driver or program has to blocking anim8or from running.

The only things I can think of are the standard walkthrough's for problems like this:

Do you have a firewall that could be blocking it from running?

Is there any error message or does it not even try to run.

Have you switched versions of anim8or to see if one version just may be the problem. (use 0.95 instead of 0.97d, or vice-versa)

Does windows 7 still have the UAC system? If so, try turn it off and trying it again.

Other than those it would be drivers, and those are a pain - in - the ...as...butt to find the offending one..

Hope this helps and if it doesn't hold hope someone else with windows 7 may know how to fix the problem.

There is no error message, the rotating circle spins for maybe 10 seconds, then it is as if nothing ever happened. No firewalls, and UAC is still here, tried all combinations. Older versions don't work either. I'll probably just have to wait for a newer version ... and wait I will, this program is worth the wait.

The fact that Anim8or works on MeepII's 64 bit windows 7 comp,indicates
that the problem is probably with the graphic driver.
You have an Intel graphic accelerator 4500 serie if I remember correctly what I read on the Compaq site.
Try to update the driver.Go to the Intel site, not   Compaq to make sure you have
the last version.
Good luck.

try this :

1:disable the DEP settings for Anim8or. Follow this link-----> http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/566/xp-sp2-how-to-turn-off-the-data-execution-prevention-feature-dep/

2: see if that fixed the issue...if it didnt go to next step.

3: right click on the Anim8or.exe icon then click on the Compatibility tab.
then put a check in the box (Run this program in compatibility mode for:        "windows XP service pack 2" )....

4: see if that fixed the problem if not then go to the next step....

5: follow step 3# but this time put a check in the box under ( Settings ) that says: "Disable desktop composition"

6: if that didnt help..............then.........um............not sure what it could be right now....

Hope this helps....

Thanks for all the advice. Sorry I'm getting back to this so late.

OK, I got Anim8or running correctly under Windows 7 64 bit.

The problem apparently was the  display driver. When I went to the Intel site, they did an online check and recommended their latest driver.

I downloaded it and installed and now everything works well.

I still have the compatibility set to Windows XP. Maybe I should clear that out and run in Windows 7 mode, but I've learned not to wake any sleeping alligators.

Again, thanks,

HArnold

Wow,  in an indirect way you fixed the problem I was having by reminding me to check for an update to my drivers.  See, intel had dropped proper opengl support in like 2009 or something, so while I could get anim8or to run, I had to deal with really outdated drivers, missing out on bug fixes that were added later to the video drivers. basically if I wanted to run anim8or on my laptop I had to deal with the compromise of blocky video encoding on nearly all videos.  I was using the old drivers for a bit until a few weeks ago when I couldn't tolerate it anymore and upgraded it. I figured I would roll back when I got a real urge to use Anim8or again. But I'm guessing Intel has been rolling out newer drivers all across the board for their various chipsets to fix the opengl issues. At least ones that pertained to Anim8or.

So yeah, thanks again.  I had turned off auto updates so I didn't realize they had updated my drivers about a month back.   Anim8or now runs on my windows 7 laptop, no compatibility mode needed.
