what is everything?if your bump map is upside down you can either flip the image file that you use as a bump map or flip the uv coordinates.

I'll just flip my file. what I want to know is what caused this.

This is a bit odd CoriDavis, I haven't seen this before.  If the bumpmap and colour images are oriented the same, they should apply the same to the object, rather than one being rotated 180 degrees or flipped vertically.  It alsso looks like some faces are reversing the bumpmap ('in' rather than 'out').  If you are ok with sharing it, maybe you could post the .an8 file, and the colour and bump images, so we can have a bit of a fiddle with it and maybe work out what's happening.

Here are my files, the medallion object and its texture files. (the original was a .bmpfile, but it wouldn't let me post it so I had to convert it to .jpg)

I haven't looked at your an8 file but from your pictures it's obvious that your bump map is upside down, the skull stands on its head ;)

If you turn it around 180 degrees then it should work

Nooo... that bumpmap IS supposed to be upside down because when it's right-side-up, it's upside down in the render

Yeeees, your texture and your bump map should be applied the way it should look, i.e. for your medallion the teeth of the skull should be at the bottom.

I fixed your file and zipped it up together with the texture and bump map files -  see render - when you applied your texture you should have clicked the UV button and turned your texture around so it looked the right way.

that's odd. maybe it was just some crazy thing wrong with my computer that made the image be flipped (when both pics were right side up)

hey lynn22. It seems like in your render there is a texture error to. If you see it, just next to the top ot the medallion. If I remember right, I had this problem once, when I made a moving face. Maybe is a error that has no solution, or an error of anim8or texturing. If someone could find a solution, would be good for people who will have this problem in the future.

That might be an artifact from using more than 5 edges to a vertex.  It looks like you have one single vertex in the middle with about 25-30 edges radiating from it to the edge.  That's known to cause all sorts of pinching and shading issues.

Maybe show us a wire-frame, so we can see the mesh structure better.  I may be wrong; it's hard to guess topology on a flat plane.
