some do it down some forward.

When the palms face forward the skin on the forearm is relaxed. (It's the natural position with regards to the skin 'tension' for lack of a better term) However when you twist it to face down the skin twists. Try looking at your forearm and you'll see the twist.

I learned this on another forum where I asked for feedback on one of my models.

I think you mean the other way around: palms down is the natural way and has no twist I believe.

I tend to do palms down.  If you stand with your arms straight down, palms inwards (like a soldier at attention) there is no 'twist' evident in the forearms and feels relaxed.  Swinging the arms straight up and out to the T pose position therefore has the palms down.  On the other hand, if you stand in a T pose with palms forward, and swing your arms down to your sides without rotating your hands, there is significant twisting apparent in the forearms.  I believe this is due to the twisting action of human arms being shared between the shoulder joint and the forearm bones when the arm is straight out, but when the arm is down the shoulder joint is not able to contribute as much to the twisting action and the forearm must compensate if the palms are to point forwards.

Yes it is more comfortable. That's what our muscles are used to. But the twist I'm referring to is just the skin and not the muscles. Minimal but present. Well, that's what I've been told and it kinda made sense to me. I shall go and read up about it. Better yet I'll ask a doctor just for knowledge sake. I'm starting to doubt my stock knowledge :P

Back on topic, I do mine face down. I find an easier time animating and posing with the palms facing down. Can't explain why though.

I think the palms-down poze was standardized by Poser several years back, and now all Poser models I've seen zero-pose to a palms-downward position.
