How to make realistic water movement?
« on: June 05, 2011, 08:11:11 pm »

Been awhile since I posted. I'm trying to make a realistic ocean. First I tried making a flat plate for the ocean, give it 20 by 20 divisions, gave it a tileable water texture, & gave it 2 morph targets for each section going side by side. The problem is that it doesn't look right. So if there's some other method on doing this or any tutorials out there then do tell.

Nice idea to try to simulate water!
You could take a look to this tutorial:

http://biederman.net/leslie/tutorials/Terranim8or/water_refraction/Animated_water.pdf

I tried it a (long) time ago and I think it is very good (you will maybe have to create a material to fit to what you want)

Actually I did look up this tutorial after I posted this. I was doing well until it started talking about this env map thing which I have no idea what it is. Is it some software I need?

Nope, just click textures and on the last slot you should see "Environment" or something like it, and it will give you a 6-slotted menu thing where you import your textures

Alright. Now I have another problem. When I try to import the image, I get the message saying that it should be the same size as the other ones which is 400 by 300. So I make it that size but then it says that it has to be a square. So what do I have to do here?

it means make the images "squares" as in instead of 400x300, try 400x400 or 300x300
