Lil' Spaceman Model
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:55:56 pm »

I made this little spaceman over the last couple days and most of it went fairly quickly, at least for me. I might tweak the fingers to they are more cartoony proportions and make the the booties more detailed, but otherwise I like how it turned out. It's a mix of box modeling with some wirework, especially for the legs. I don't know if there is an officially term for wireing together shapes to other shapes and then adding surfaces, but I did a bit of that too, as I find it's a nice way to add detail. The chest plate mostly.
For once, I like how it looks both subdivided and normal.
All colouring is with materials, texturing is dark voodoo to me still.

looks pretty good. you should probably texture his front plate thing on his stomach. this character looks like it would be really fun to animate. keep it up

Thank you very much.  ;D
Alas, texturing, as mentioned, is a dark and mystical art to me as rigging, if not more so.
I made this little scene using a lander I made for our intrepid adventurer, and the ground is a heightmap of some craters I found online  extruded in terranim8or.

Your character looks really funny ;) Do you plan animating your scene?

I believe the ground has too few divisions so for me it looks too smooth for a Moon surface. If I could suggest something:
- I'd either model craters by hand in cartoony manner, so they would suggest that it's Moon.
- I'd make more detailed mesh, maybe procedurally generated.

The height map I found is fairly high resolution, I'll re-extrude (or whatever the technical term is)  with higher divisions, perhaps adding a few rocks on the surface.
As for  animating, I hope to. Besides just having fun exploring this art, I made this model with every piece of knowledge I know on making a simple to animate model.
Do you, or any else, know any good tutorials on using the influence volumes?
