My Little Pony: Friendship is Witchcraft SWEETIE BOT
« on: April 26, 2012, 02:54:42 pm »

Still a WIP. Just something I made so that I can make some cool images, maybe even animations for a remix her song I'm working on.

I know there are quite a few bronys on this board, any one got good helpful criticism?

Also which render looks better? Left or right?

Personally I prefer the left in terms of the material having a lighter ambience or emissive value. I prefer the right in terms of the softer (pyramid?) AA filter, instead of the sharp, probably bicubic AA filter that the left has.

A crit regarding the nose, I think the crease along the bridge of the nose detracts from her design. I'd like to see a version without that crease (but with the same front-crease of the nose), to see if it looks more My Little Pony-like. Also, the horn could probably use a crease along its base.

[edit]Oh, and how is the mouth supposed to work? Do you have an exploded view of the parts we can look at?

That's awesome! I love how you managed to do the hair.  I like the right render better, the left looks kind of like it's glowing a little too much.  I do agree with Raxx though on the mouth, it needs some kind of joint on it.

@ Raxx:
Hmm, well how's this then?

Also the mouth doesn't really work. Because it's too hard to make expressive faces using mechanical rules.

If your asking because you want to know why I divided the head into two parts, I didn't want it to stand out as something completely different than the rest of her mechanical body.

@Davis, I'm keeping tallies. Thanks, this is my fist attempt at making 3D hair curls.

So I finally Rigged her. I shaded her two different ways this time again. Which is better?

Here is the song I was working on:

The crease I suggested to eliminate was the one on the bridge of the nose, not the one on the tip of the nose.

Figure 1. Location of the bridge of the nose

Again, I prefer the left version in terms of shading. However, it's too saturated in some areas. Perhaps you can blend the material's color channels a little better.

I know this is just a temporary pose, but at a quick glance the tail looked like it was part of her body, as if her legs were splayed out behind her. I suggest rigging the tail so that you can curl it around her left or right side, for if you ever animate her laying down.

Oh that crease? I was kinda under the impression that it's supposed to be there when I saw this profile:

I'll see what I can do about it though. Ok done. And the tail has 3 bones, so it can wrap around her side.

Hm, it's true that Sweetie was given a stubbier nose, probably to give a more child-like appearance than the other ponies. I had suggested eliminating the crease to see if it helps pass off a more "pony" feel to the head. However, I can't say for certain if it helps. It's more difficult since there isn't a distinct outline of her contours, unlike with the actual cartoon version. I think at this point it's more up to your discretion and artistic license whether or not the nose should be changed.

Also, the eyes in the original are lower set than how you have them, which gives her a larger forehead and therefore more child-like features. I figure by now you're probably tired of messing around with her features, though, so you can take that observation with a grain of salt if you wish :P

As for the tail, much better :)

The crease is also indicated in the cartoon from front view.

Not sure what you mean by "the other  ponies." It's pretty standard:

Thanks about the tip on the eyes. It's hard to translate a 2D cartoon to a 3D model and make it look good. But I think it helped a ton:

Anything more you can see that needs fixing?

The creases in the front view you're referring to are just contour lines, not necessarily creases. As you can see in the second reference image you just posted, the more "grown up" ponies have a more curved bridge to their noses, versus the more childlike ones like Sweetie. The more grown up ones also have larger, more angular eyes that reduce the size of their foreheads, thus differentiating them from the more childlike features of Sweetie and whatever others. I think the ear ratios are also different, but it's hard to tell. They're subtle, small differences...*shrug*

I believe the nose is still the problem area that's preventing her from reaching her maximum potential. Right now her nose has a convex contour going from her eyeball to her nose. I think you need to give the side of her nose a more concave contour than what she has. It'll be a more true interpretation of the 2D version.

I hate referencing other 3D models, but youtube.com/watch?v=n-Ap4XxwZkQ[/youtube]&feature=related]this clip shows what I mean. If you can get the nose right, you can probably add one or two of the original creases and it'll look fine.

(by the way, when you repositioned the eyes, the eyeball got offset a little. Also, the area right under the eye needs some work)

Ugh...I never watched this cutsie My Little Pony stuff...but the more I'm looking at this stuff, the stronger the urge is to watch it. Must..not...get....sucked....in.....

For someone who doesn't know much about the cartoon itself, you sure know how to figure out about accuracies. Your a good crit Raxx.

Raxx, This cartoon is actually a lot more violent then you think:
