Rankings in the Forum
« on: March 26, 2008, 04:59:58 am »

(Remember: this is just a thought)
Currently a users rank is based on the number of posts by that user
Personally I think it would be better if the rank was based on how helpful and relevant the posts were
This could probably done by other users voting on each post, e.g. I post something and the topic starter says it wasn't useful so i have a bad ranking
It would be great so users can see ranking and read the posts from the higher ranked users as their more likely to get better help from them

Though, I'm not sure how easily Steve will be able to implement this idea onto the forum, or if he wants to

What do you guys think

good idea, mabye some sort of recommendation feature, somewhere on the site, steve checks it when he feels like, checks out who is being recommended, and decides wether they are rank-up-worthy....couldn't find a word for it

again, good idea, might be tough to implement though

good idea i suppose! Though the only bad thing is that people could each other bad rating for the fun of it and it would not be fair. Maybe you should only be able to give one person a rating over a certain period of time

yeah i though of that myself, it's going to be a problem, ok i've got a better idea, it's based on the average of all users votes, votes are out of 10 or maybe 100, so if someone votes a post was bad, it just lowers the posters' average mark and if the the post was actually good the voters' intelligence will be deemed questionable
also, we're (maybe just me since it's was my idea) going to have to make sure this isn't used idiotically by some users, but i doubt there are idiots on the forum :)

I can tell you in the 1 and a half years I've been here, there have been only like 2 cases of Annoyed spammers who want there question answered. So I think in terms of fairness we're good.

I don`t think you will get any of this unless steve decides to do something about it!

There is a thing called "Karma that can be used with SMF forums it is inbuilt but on this site it has not been implemented basically because it would be open to abuse!

There are also mods that can be used on an SMF forum (like this one and also ours at Animanon and Anim8or.org ) that can give a vote to topics but that is not on here either.

I would think that embedding videos (youtube) would be better!

Still all these thoughts are entirely up to the administrator of the forum as to whether he implements them or pooh- poohs them!

Spicy ---
If nobody else has mentioned it in the past, you really should review the forum rules, and refrain from making posts that don't contribute any additional knowledge or information to the benefit of others.  Simply stating an opinion in a thread such as this is not helpful, and makes it appear that all you're attempting to do is increase your post count.

I simply don't agree, because it allows users to censor certain posts, as it happens with YouTube comments. Anything that allows a user rating other user, directly and indirectly, is a bad idea. That is why some SMF administrators don't implement the karma feature.

Of course, besides the karma feature there is always the temptation to disable a user with a bad karma, ultimately enabling revenge and user "bans" by users. If the idea was implemented, most posts would have a negative rating. You can mark my words, since in SMF forums having the karma feature, most users have negative karma (below -30) and a few have a positive karma (above +2).

yeah, it's quite risky, and i understand these bad points, but come on, i think that we're all friends here, i've never encountered any hostility between any posters, but i see where you're coming from, just for fun i've attached an anim8or file, including 2 glasses of stuff, made with v0.95, and very low poly, enjoy ;D
