55-Gallon Barrel (Texture!)
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:48:12 pm »

Hello,

I'm so excited!  ;D I finally finished a Low polygon model! It Has UV-MAP and my first texture... 8)

This is the trash can version, "Explosive" version is coming next ...after some tips on how to make the texture better, of course.

I'm looking for Critiques, Comments and tips on the model and texture, not the render.

The model was very, very, very (<- About 100 more) simple, but as I wanted this texture job to be easy I went for easy modeling as well.

The texture is a mix of many different metal textures I had already and Paint.net effects. I would have used my Paint shop 9 program to make the texture, but for the life of me I can't find the cloud filter button?

The Bottom one is of the UV Map. It's probably set up wrong? :(

Nice texture suppastar.  I can share your excitement.  Good work.

Just one suggestion, if you want to make it more detailed and realistic, you can try some rust or chipped paint on the raised surface like the raised ridges on the barrel and some dirt/grime on the lower edge.  Try it.

Thank you!

Texture update, after spending some time with both Paint.net and PSP9 I've been able to make a better base (Clean-ish) texture.

it's 1024x1024 in it's original size. Once I have it Finished and all versions done (Clean and Damaged/Rusty), I will re-size down to 512 x 512, for the finishing touches.

Well, what do you think?  C&C!

NOTE: As of now I'm just working texture. Once I get the texture done I might redo the model and make it higher in polygons and make the UV's fit to the texture. Also, I wont do a final render until I at least get the new Texture done.

Looks pretty nice. Needs more details :)

How did you do the UV-map?

@ Headwax

Thank you, will do!

Thank you, planing on it. The new texture is just a clean base. Once I get all the shading/detail work done then comes the rust and paint chip layers. :)

@TomiL

LithUnwrap 1.3 is what I use, its free and very powerful

EDIT: Test render with new texture, looks a lot better!

New Model!

I just couldn't stand to look at the extremely low poly model and it's very hard edges.

The funny thing is the new model looks a lot better, also a better texture, and almost the same amount of polygons. I don't know how I do this, my first version I always hate it and redo it. Then once I make the second version it's usually around the same amount of polygon but a lot more detailed?

Huh, anyway...

The Garbage in the trash can version was hard to get it to look like it was actually in the can/other garbage and not floating. :P

As you can see it's still the clean texture, I'm working on making graffiti, signs and stickers that people for some reason like to put on trash cans.

I like this UV Set up more anyway.

BTW: The giant SUPPASTAR in the texture is just a water mark, I just figured it's something people do when you don't want a whole texture stolen? If they want a part of they have to work for it.

Great improvements in the texture there!  The new  texture looks loads better, and I'm glad the lowpoly model could be improved as well.
I look forward to what you come up with.  Perhaps a bumpmap and specular map could benefit the model as well?
