Is there any way to mirror your modeling-process?
« on: June 08, 2013, 12:15:03 pm »

Hi, I wonder if there is anyway to mirror your process while you are working. I don't mean a way to mirror objects, as with the mirror-tool, what I mean is a way to mirror the changes you do to models, lines, points, extrusions etc.

For example, if I want to model a head which is similar on the both sides I likely want to just model one side of the head and then mirror it. The problem is that the two sides would act as separate models, even if I join them their points won't be connected.
Additionaly its hard to make the "middle" of the head, there the two sides is supposed to meet, perfectly flat so the two sides will match eachother perfectly.
Instead of trying to adjust the middle-points, alternatively by scaling them down on the x-axis (or whatever axis you mirrored on), it would be much easier if you simply could have whatever change you do on one side also happen on the other side as well. So if you would extrude a face on one side, a correspnding face would extrude similary at the other side of the object as well.

I've seen this technique in other softwares, like Blender. Since I'm not used to Blender I can't tell how it works in detailes, but I think it's similary to what I described above.
So again, is there anyway to mirror your modeling-process, and changes, you do to a model in anim8or?

                                                                                                                        Thanks in advance

The problem is that the two sides would act as separate models, even if I join them their points won't be connected.
That's because hitting join only converts the two meshes into one. However you can merge two (or more) points together to make a model seamless by hitting SHIFT-L or going into edit and clicking on merge points when two (or more) points are selected in vertex/point edit mode. So by modeling one side, mirroring it then converting it to a single mesh by joining solids you can then stitch together each point to make the model seamless.
This is a really good method for making symmetrical details like human faces.

To add To Cooldudes reply If you intend to join the Objects together you should first highlight both of them then use the Menu/Build/Join Solids which will convert those two objects into one then you can start to merge the points using Shift/L

Bobits old youtube Video Might be what you are looking for as well, interesting

With regards to the New Mirror tool in Anim8or 0.97e, it is a little different to blenders mirror tool. There still appears to be some bugs in Anim8or`s version and can do weird things.Even worse its not available in windows XP

I always used to select the vertices I wanted to "mirror" and move them around with the non-uniform scale tool.  Of course this still meant duplicating all tasks involving cutting new vertices, filling in faces, etc.  But, I found it was pretty fast.  Obsolete now, all hail our fearless leader.
