Model Turned Black
« on: June 03, 2013, 11:16:21 pm »

Hey everyone, Long time no see.

So I've been remaking my pony model for the billionth time in hopes of making an animated web series. I went to open up Anim8or one day to skin my model, and this happened:

Any idea what went wrong? The entire model is encased in a transparent layer (for the cartoon look) and it seems to have turned black. I removed the texture and readded it, but that didn't seem to work. It looks this way in Figure Mode too. Can this be fixed?

It looks perfectly fine when it's rendered, I just can't see my parts.

Hi Cori.  Check if File>Configure GUI>Transparent Faces is ticked.

It was checked. I unchecked it to see what would happen, and it didn't change so I set it back. There is no transparent texture covering the eyes, so maybe transparency isn't the problem.

EDIT: I FIGURED IT OUT! I didn't have the texture listed in Diffuse for some reason. (Now I know why. I had it set to 0 as to not interfere with the color of my model, and when Anim8or was closed, it removed the texture.)

You know whats weird after watching a play through of a my little pony mod from a youtuber named mark I saw this. Isn't that kinda freaky :P

I would also like to add to this for anyone searching up this problem, that sometimes I get anything that has bump maps turned black. This is a weird glitch when anim8or loads up with the shaders from the preferences checked on.
To fix this I have to turn off shaders, load up anim8or (with them still off) then turn back on the shaders and reloading anim8or. Sometimes it took me a second try in order for it to work (however I'm not sure if this is just because I screwed up the order the first time).

I fixed the problem of my Diffuse disappearing by setting it to 0.001 instead of 0. It makes it save the value and it doesn't mess with the brightness of my texture.

Speaking of textures, it doesn't seem to let me load a new 'skin', even though it's 24-bit Bitmap. It was made in GIMP so I figured it was a coding problem, so I copied it into Paint and resaved it, but it's still not loading. Now what's the problem? The original base skin loads just fine and it too is 24-bit Bitmap. JPEG will work, but you know I don't like what JPEG does to solid color images.

Hello there,

it's a known bug for me - the GIMP saved *.bmp files do not load correctly in Anim8or even when saved in the right format and when you open and immediately save the bitmap in the MSPaint it's saves with exactly the same header (or byte order?) as loaded. Best workaround - open in MSPaint (or something that's compatible), save as *.png, close, open the *.png file, save as *.bmp - this way you'll have the format correctly changed and nothing will get lost during the conversion.

CoriDavis, Gimp is a really great program. I use it all the time for my textures.
Bit of a learning curve, but worth the effort. I'm currently using Gimp 2.8.

If you are going to save your Anim8or image in Gimp then, Export > Select Windows bmp in filetype.
Export option window appears,  Under 'Compatibility' make sure you check 'Do not write color space information'  and under 'Advanced' make sure 24 bits is selected.

It should load fine in Anim8or after that.

Thanks. Dwsel's fix worked too, but I'll remember that for the future.
