Mouth morphs test
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:22:36 pm »

So I put this together over 2 days a couple days ago. Sadly, I broke the file before I could do all the cool stuff I had planned (you can see in the very beginning, the character turns his torso and his eyes have just a couple of microsaccades and a lot of blinking and eyelid motion throughout). In any case, I'll certainly finish it (and clean up the bad morphs) if I get the file fixed.

Like I said, I only made it through the complete mouth morph and all the blinking before I (on my own terms) accidently broke the file. Tell me what you think!

Most of it is very good especially early parts.. the word 'character' seems a bit wonky...and later it does get a bit manic.

Good job 'davdud101'. Lip syncing never fails to make me laugh.

Hello again davdud101. Was a bummer when you lost your earlier attempt, but well done on not giving up.  :)

As you said in your video, "theres not a lot of audio happening in Anim8or videos", and actually, lipsyncing is
very rare here indeed, which is surprising, considering how well anim8or handles it. The easy to use morph system and graph editor are perfect for the job.
Anyway, because i love doing this stuff,  i have a particular interest in your project, and hope to help keep you keen. :D (or you'll get sick to death of my ongoing raves) :)

So heres my first rave, re "Anim8or Morphs (lipsyncing) test."

Probly the first thing that came to my mind was 'you really jumped in at the deep end here.
40 seconds of casual chat is a big task. Might i suggest a slightly different approach. It worked for me, and i
would recommend it to anyone wanting to 'put some time into bringing their characters to life with sound'.

This is only my personal thought of course, but i found that animating the lip syncing to the lyrics of a song is
hugely helpfull in understanding timing and expression.
The words aren't all rolling along as in a casual conversation, where, without facial expressions, the actual mouth movements can become rather 'humdrum'. I mean, you can say 'long day', or 'looooong day'.
Next point is eye movements. Well done. They look great. I noticed early on in the piece that his eyeballs veer slightly to left and right as he is talking, (microsaccades?)  It  looks really effective, as if he was thinking about his talking. Thanks for introducing me to that word, and the concept. (note to self. microsaccades)
Another thing about the eyes is the eyebrows. Its worth keeping in mind that eyebrows are usually raised on
'particular' words, often associated with 'stressing a point'. Too many 'random' eyebrow raises distracts the viewer from the conversation.
As far as the mouth timing goes, i go back to the point about 'jumping in at the deep end'. To get perfectly 40 seconds of normal speed talking is a huge task. (again,I would urge you to try something a little less daunting. I'm sure it will pay off for you in the long run.)
One last thing, for now ;), is i notice he has no teeth or tongue.
Its not too late to add them. If you can't add them to your object, becoz of losing existing morphs. They can
always be made as seperate objects and added to a bone in figure mode. I'm in the process now of updating one of my characters.  Previously i've used 3 or 4 bones to bend the tongue. Now i'm just adding the tongue to 1 bone, and animating it with morph targets. Works a treat. Have also added teeth as a seperate object. Haven't tested it yet, but its looking hopefull.
Whew. Time for me to stop this talking and get back to it.
Good luck with this project, davdud. Looking fwd to more.
Don't worry, i won't always go on and on and on and on.... ;)

Peace. :)

Very good, indeed! try adding teeth next time. The blinking action takes your eyes away from the mouth. I did not mind the back ground noise, and you have a honest clear voice, well done. Thank you for sharing this.

davdud101 :)
Just a quick thought i had last night. If you are set on using your existing wav file, could i suggest that you break it down into sections of a dozen words or so at a time.
just a thought...although you might find it easier to go through the whole lot as it is. i understand that we all find our own ways of doing things in the end, that we feel comfortable with, so.....cool. Just wanted to mention it.  :)

@the captain yeh, 'character' came out very rough, it was more of some lip-pokey-outey movement... It'll be worked on (if possible). The second half was roooough! I started of by hand-adjusting every few keyframes to get unique lip motions even for the same phonemes (taking 4hrs to complete 10s, so 2.5s/hr), but I got SOOO lazy that I ended up copying and pasting reused phonemes (reducing time to more like 15s/hr, at a sad loss of quality and realism!!)

@Crash I know what you mean. It looks a touch silly, especially when stuff doesn't work exactly right :)

@ johnar... I'll address you next post!! :D

@the DUDE lol thanks, and yeah! Hopefully my voice is pleasant ;)

@ian, thanks! You were actually the commenter who initiated the idea! In any case, I wasn't paying enough attention to where the blinking landed, which is why he blinks 5 times in 2 seconds towards the end. Definitely something ill have to keep in mind for next time. I'll also give the mouth details a shot!

The eye movements were planned to be what really brought the character from mere animated head with a voice... To a true human with which the viewer could connect. I was gonna make those really convey that thoughtful pondering which was heard in the voice... Directly based on what I did in the video clip.

The eyebrows I totally did as a throw-n-go... Just to fill space between  the blinks. I used the graph editor to sends the eyebrows upwards or downwards at my whim, but I did not pay any attention to the stressed points, syllables, etc! I will next time!

As far as the breaking it down goes, that's pure genius! If broken in to 2- or 3-second segments, I'm sure I could achieve a much higher quality in still a relatively short amount of time.

'davdud101'. Just to clarify. I don't think it looks silly. I just find lip syncing truly amusing
and it puts a smile on my face. A character speaking is much more interesting to watch.
I think you're off to a great start.

Lol, thanks Crash! Though I do have to admit that for me, stuff like motion capture for 3d characters can be humorous. But thankyew!!

Neirao, I had no idea papaga8or was your creation! I will certainly have to look into it, thanks :)

After watching it several times I think it's a good piece of lipsyncing. I think that the only problem of this character is that it suffers from stiffness caused by the lack of body movement. Maybe some additional degrees of freedom in neck and arms would be beneficial for the movement of this character? I hope it will be possible to fix the source file and you will be able to continue progressing.

I mean those were suuuuper-intended things to process, dwsel! I basically wanted this to almost look like a motion-capture animation, with lots of realistic movements and stuff, parting from a cartoonish appearance. If I don't get the file back, I'll start over.
