can't figure out how I DID THIS ;)
« on: June 25, 2014, 12:56:48 pm »

Simple sphere, subdivided,
chose two face, and extruded,

I then did bridging to remove gap, and started messing around,  being rather new to anim8tor.

I created a 'wing' like shape,  pointy at tip by scaling in ( I think).

Im not sure HOW I did this next trick, but I was able to  ( imagine you are viewing in top view!) take that extruded piece ( wing, as if wing on a plane) and 'rotate' it so that it was a actual curved wing shape, as on a plane, instead of sticking straight out .

I"ve tried everything and I can't figure out how I did it, can anyone figure this one out ? ;))

TH anyone! ;))

cheers

I think I get an idea of what you did, but posting pics would help for sure! You didn't use the actual Rotate tool? (I thiiiiink it's "r")

Here is the picture,,

http://1drv.ms/1mfAVse

see the yellow part, which would be  a planes wing. I somehow managed, to  scale/move/rotate ( don't recall..UGH ;) .)  that section , and instead of it being straight..it was curved to the right, as a wing would be on that side.

Embarrassing I can't remember,,but I was experimenting at the time, and I'm not well versed in amim8tor yet to know how to do complex things ? ;))

I tried rotating, moving, scaling and all other tools in the toolbar ( left side and top), but nothing is   getting it where it needs to go ;)

I tried rotate tool, but I can't rotate anything actually...I wonder if I'm in the wrong mode ....?

cheers

P.s.--If I use the rotate 'icon' (r), then yes it rotates, but it just makes weird sheering actions of the faces , instead of rotating the entire thing on 'x' axis, as if to look like a plane's wing, literally..doesn't have to be 'curved' per se, just not straight out as it is now...I wish I could remember how I did this..:))

OH I believe that is either a rotation with the right mouse button held down (in side view, maybe? sorry, I'm rusty from my LONG hiatus) or you could set the axis with the XYZ buttons near the top of the right sidebar and it should allow you to disable the axii you don't want to move on.
Hopefully this info is correct, but someone more *current* than me needs to validate it.

If the rotate tool is active, you can click and drag with the right mouse button and it'll rotate it perpendicular to the view, which is probably what you want.

Using 'r' for rotate, and      holding RMB and moving mouse, and I get zero movement of just the faces I"ve got selected, which in this case as seen in photo, is of the 'wing' section of mesh. I don't want to rotate entire thing, just the wing,- to the right so I can mimic a bird/plane.

Do I need to be in some special mode ?

thx

The rotate tool does not currently affect faces. If you want to rotate the faces, you can use the rotate face tool (which has a different behavior than the normal rotate tool), or press T to select the points of that face, and then you can rotate them that way.

If anything, just select the points you want to be rotated, and use the rotate tool.

What is it that affects , some part of my mesh,  that would allow me to rotate this 'wing' from straight down in the picture, to 90D to the right ( without sheering) ? BY sheering, I mean that as I rotate, the verts /faces around the wing are  horribly distorted, so its a dead end trying that.

I tried it with verts, but the effect is far far too extreme, as doing it the unknown way I did it ( ugh) , had a much more subtle effect which is desired. Its more as if I was in some proportional editing mode, the movement wasn't extreme and allowed me to shape nicely.

What I saw reminded me of max or mayas' 'soft' mode, where moving things was a very gentle experience..almost like sculpting  of sorts...

weird ;)

Maybe I was using 1088 , where there is a new feature or something ? I guess I could try running that and see if I can replicate things...Gah :(
